What color is the shell of the Red Prawn durian variety? Origin of the name and taste characteristics
Red Prawn durian usually grows into an elongated shape like an American football, while D24 is very round. The bottom of the Red Prawn durian usually has a stretched-out pointed tip, and it is made only of shell, which means you have to fight through several inches of cement-like durian shell to get to this yumminess.
Shell Color
Red Prawn is usually a dark brown, as if it has been dusted with a pearly powder. It makes it a very beautiful durian. Coming out of the others, it has a slight sheen, even approaching a lavender tone. Occasionally it can have a green tint, but this only happens outside Penang. The Red Prawn we see in the Philippines is the greenest we have ever seen. It must be related to climate differences in the soil or different nutrient ratios.
From a distance, the durian's skin looks almost smooth or bumpy. Be careful, those nubby spikes are still very sharp! Usually there is a lighter, smooth ring around the base of each spike, with a space where you can easily draw a finger between the thorns. This is impossible with the tightly clustered spikes of D24!
Red Prawn durian is really hard to open. You almost need a chainsaw to get into these suckers, but that is all part of the fun. When you have to work for it, everything tastes better, and this may be part of the secret of Red Prawn. Look at how wide the core of Red Prawn is compared with D24. D24 has a narrower, weaker core (can you see the protruding seam?) and an overall thinner shell. This means opening D24 is much easier, but less rewarding.
The durian is called “Red Prawn” because the flesh inside the shell is slightly pink in color and curved in shape, which reminds people of the large prawn red shrimp of Penang sea shrimp. The red prawn of sea shrimp, like the red prawn of the tree, is an expensive delicacy, and this is no coincidence.
D24 itself is quite good, but the dull yellow is somehow not as inspiring as the subtle cream and salmon shades of Red Prawn. There is a silky color here, ranging from delicate pale pink to almost orange, filling the stomach with anticipation.
