If you love eating apples, do you know which early-ripening apple varieties there are? Have you heard of the newest apple variety, the MN55 apple? The new American apple variety MN55 is a high-quality early-ripening red apple, and it does not yet have a corresponding official commercial name.

It can ripen and go on the market in August each year. This variety was created by crossing Honeycrisp with the University of Arkansas AA44 apple, achieving a delightful result, and industry insiders believe its market position is expected to surpass that of the Honeycrisp apple. The MN55 apple makes the apple marketing season begin a month earlier than before, meeting the market demand for high-quality early-ripening fruit, whereas previously apples often had to wait until after September before they began to go on the market. Not only that, MN55 has excellent storability and can continue to be sold into winter. In terms of taste, MN55 has a crisp, bursting texture, a moderate sugar-to-acid ratio, and a pleasant fruity aroma.

The successful introduction of MN55 was not a coincidence or an accident, because David Bedford is also the creator of the Honeycrisp apple variety. The launch of the Honeycrisp apple set an industry benchmark for the development of new apple varieties, making the taste requirements for new varieties stricter than before. However, the Honeycrisp apple is very picky about its growing environment, and once the ambient temperature is too high it does not grow easily, so David began considering crossing the Honeycrisp apple with other varieties to improve it, and ultimately succeeded in developing the new MN55 variety. At present, Stemilt has already conducted field trials of MN55 and has cultivated new saplings for planting next spring. They plan to bring it to market in small quantities in 2017, and then gradually increase production afterwards.
