A charming, luminous, bold and lively fragrance, a sweetness so plump it is almost dripping, a tartness within the sweetness that is slightly fresh and bracing, and a texture both fine, soft and glutinous yet springy to the bite…… this is the most beloved star of the hot midsummer —— the Irwin mango.
The Irwin mango, whose original variety was produced in Florida, USA, was introduced by Zheng Hanchi in the 1950s to Yujing Township, Tainan County, Taiwan Province, China. This variety is suitable for close planting, with a round-headed canopy, conical inflorescences, and light red pedicels; the flowering period is generally February to March, the proportion of bisexual flowers is high, the fruit is relatively large, long ovate, with an average fruit weight of about 320 grams; when ripe, the skin is purplish red, the flesh is flame yellow, with very few fibers, fine and tender texture, soluble solids above 12%, and top-grade quality. Because the original variety was difficult to produce abundantly, the well-known local fruit farmer Lin Changshan used native mango as rootstock and went to Zheng Hanchi's home to cut branches from the Irwin mango tree for grafting; overcoming cold damage and pests and diseases, the mango that had traveled across the ocean thus began to continue its bloodline in Taiwan. Lin wanted his son to abandon farming for literature, so he named it -- Irwin, which also made “Irwin mango” the number one brand of Taiwanese mango, and Lin Changshan is also known as the father of mango.
