Jackfruit is one of the common tropical fruits, with a fresh, fragrant taste and a very bouncy, chewy texture, making it widely loved by the public. Jackfruit originated in India and Southeast Asia, and has now been introduced to China for nearly a thousand years, with extremely high cultivation value. So where in China are jackfruit mainly grown? What are the common jackfruit varieties? Let's find out together.

Where in China is jackfruit grown?

It is understood that jackfruit is currently cultivated in tropical regions of both the northern and southern hemispheres, with major producing countries including India, Bangladesh and Malaysia. In China, jackfruit also has a history of more than a thousand years, and is now mainly distributed in Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Fujian and Taiwan, China, among other provinces and cities. Hainan province has the most planting, with cultivation throughout the province, making it one of the common tropical fruit trees.

What are the common jackfruit varieties?

1. Youbao jackfruit

Youbao jackfruit is mainly distributed in China in rural areas of Guangxi and Guangdong, where it is planted in scattered small quantities; of course, it is also found in Fujian and Hainan. The fruit of this variety is irregularly spherical, somewhat like a deformed sphere, weighing from 5-10 jin, with yellow flesh in a soft, mushy state, a strong fragrance and very high sweetness. It is very suitable for people with poor teeth.

2. Yellow-fleshed dry-bract jackfruit

The distribution range of yellow-fleshed dry-bract jackfruit is similar to that of Youbao jackfruit. The normal shape of this variety's fruit is spherical, relatively large, and when fully ripe the flesh is pale yellow, dry with no juice flowing out, and the fragrance is likewise fairly strong. Although it is not yet planted on a large scale, based on feedback from most people who have eaten it, it is more popular than Hainan's Malaysia jackfruit; after all, this is a true local product.

3. Malaysia No. 1 jackfruit

Malaysia No. 1 jackfruit originates from Malaysia, and in China it is mainly grown in Hainan. This variety's more suitable growing temperature is that of tropical regions, roughly 15-35°C; in winter it must not go below 10 degrees, otherwise fruiting will be delayed the following year. Malaysia No. 1 jackfruit has a huge, long oval fruit and is currently the largest jackfruit variety.

4. Thailand No. 8 red-fleshed jackfruit

The most suitable planting environment is best kept consistent with Thailand's climate, so in China, apart from Hainan, other places are not suitable for growing it. Unless you have experience with greenhouse cultivation, you can keep it warm in winter. This variety's fruit is oval, weighing around 10-20 jin, with thick, crisp flesh that is slightly reddish, similar to orange, and has a special orange-like fragrance.

Overall, jackfruit's origins and varieties are very diverse, so before planting jackfruit, everyone must choose a suitable variety according to local climate conditions, for example tropical varieties need a tropical climate, while local varieties are relatively cold-tolerant, and so on.
