The Flower Language of Purple Tulips

Noble love, endless love, most beloved, imperishable love, eternal love, and no regrets in this life.

The Kingdom of Tulips

When people talk about tulips, they will surely think of the tulip kingdom——the Netherlands. However, the first people in the world to cultivate tulips were the Turks. They were introduced to the Netherlands only in the 16th century, and swept across Europe in the 17th century. Tulips are regarded as a symbol of victory and beauty, and they also represent a declaration of love and eternal blessings.

The Legend of the Purple Tulip

Noble love, endless love. The name tulip comes from the Latin "dulband". Tulips originated in the Mediterranean, Turkey and Asia Minor, namely Iran and China's Xinjiang and other places, and were brought to Europe by Western missionaries in the 16th century. Its original name Tulipa means "beautiful turban" in Turkish. As early as the 17th century, they were specially planted for the royal nobles to admire in the imperial gardens of the Ottoman Empire. In 1863 they were introduced by flower merchants to the Netherlands for business, and in order to promote their products they specially made up a story: In the Netherlands there is a sad yet beautiful legend. There was a beautiful maiden named Anna, who was pursued at the same time by three brave warriors, Jack, Kete and Faxi. In order to win Anna's heart, each of the warriors took his most precious family heirloom - a crown, a sword and gold - to propose to her. But the understanding Anna felt that all three were very good. She truly could not choose one among them, and was unwilling to hurt any one of them, so she did not give any response to any of them.

All three warriors believed that they would surely win Anna's heart, so whenever they met, they would shout at each other. Quite confidently they said: “Just you wait! Anna will surely walk down the aisle with me before long, so just wait to drink at our wedding!” When the other two heard this, they were immediately furious and started fighting right there in the street. The warriors could not care at all about the calm, cold and rational impression they had given before. Now they looked just like a bunch of children who had never grown up, coming to blows over candy.

Anna knew that her silence not only could not solve the problem, but instead made it worse, so Anna sought out the three warriors and made things clear. Anna returned to them the proposal gifts the three had given her; unexpectedly, they refused to take the things back, insisted that Anna keep them, and also asked Anna to think it over more.

Anna was extremely troubled. She quite admired their bravery on the battlefield; but admiration does not equal love. Toward them, the feeling of love was always just a little lacking. But Anna was too embarrassed to say it to them plainly, and she was very afraid that saying it would break their hearts.

Jack, Kete and Faxi put on farces in the street every few days. Whenever they started fighting, the people on the road had to quickly find a safe place to hide, so as not to be caught in the crossfire. Seeing the situation grow more and more serious, Anna felt very sad in her heart. She knew that there would never be an end to this matter unless she herself were no longer in this world; only then would it subside.

Anna went into the enchanted forest to find the flower goddess, and she told the flower goddess the whole story from beginning to end. With tears in her eyes, Anna said to the flower goddess: “Flower goddess, I really do not know what to do. My heart is so troubled and confused. I am very grateful to the three of them for their kindness, but I cannot give them a promise, and that is unfair to the other two! Please, flower goddess, turn me into a flower! Let me sleep forever holding their love.”

The flower goddess understood Anna's helplessness, and she agreed to Anna's request. The flower goddess waved the magic wand in her hand, and Anna immediately turned into a tulip, sleeping forever in the enchanted forest. The flower is the crown, the leaves are like a sword, and the gold is the bulb, letting the love of the three warriors accompany Anna in her eternal sleep. It also brought this story with no ending to a not entirely perfect full stop.
