The perfume lily is a type of lily, also known as Casablanca and heaven lily, with origins in the Himalayan region, Australia, and various other areas. Westerners regard the lily as a symbol of purity. Around 1000 AD, the tops of the pillars of the temple of King Solomon of Israel were decorated with lily flowers. The lily's name honors the Virgin Mary, and since ancient times the Virgin has been regarded by Christianity as a symbol of purity, so its flower meaning is purity.

Origin of the Perfume Lily

The perfume lily originates from the Himalayan region, Australia, and various other areas.

The Legend of the Lily

The story of the lily's origin is extremely poignant. Legend says that Eve and Adam were tempted by the serpent to eat the forbidden fruit and were therefore expelled from the Garden of Eden. In her remorse, Eve could not help shedding sorrowful tears, and when the tears fell to the ground they turned into pure white, fragrant lily flowers.

A German Legend

There is an old legend about the lily that is known to people in almost every country in the world. A girl named Alice lived with her mother in the Harz mountain region. One day, the Grand Duke of Laurenburg passed by in a carriage. When he saw Alice, he actually thought she was a fairy descended to earth and immediately invited her to return to the city with him. He thought that as a grand duke with great power he could be unreasonable. Unexpectedly, Alice stubbornly refused. The grand duke would not give up and pulled the girl and would not let go. The girl screamed and called on heaven for protection, and suddenly a divine wind arose and the girl disappeared. Yet from the ground where the girl had stood rose a lily flower, giving off waves of delicate fragrance. This is the origin of the lily flower in foreign legend. The lily represents purity and respect, and the white lily in particular is most highly esteemed. In the social customs of that time, a woman wearing white clothes and holding a lily in her hand indicated nobility and chastity. In many medieval paintings of the Virgin Mary, the lily was painted with neither stamens nor pistils, implying no impure sexual thoughts.

Ancient Greek Legend

In mythology, there is another legend about the origin of the lily: the god Zeus had a son named Hercules, the god of strength. He had accomplished 12 heroic deeds. Hercules heard that if he drank the milk of the goddess Juno, he would live forever. Yet how easy was it to obtain Juno's milk! Zeus used some scheming and summoned the gods to drink and feast, deliberately arranging a large amount of nectar (the drink of the gods) for Juno at the banquet, and Juno indeed drank until she was dead drunk. Zeus then told his son Hercules to throw himself onto Juno and suck her milk. The more Hercules drank, the stronger he became. Before he could swallow all the milk in his mouth, it flowed to the ground, and wherever the milk fell, snow-white fragrant flowers immediately grew, and people all called them lilies.
