The cultivation value of littleleaf boxwood

1. Landscaping: Littleleaf boxwood is a commonly used foliage tree species. It is not only an evergreen species but also resistant to pollution, and it can absorb toxic gases such as sulfur dioxide from the air, helping to purify the atmosphere. It is especially suitable for planting as greenery along roads with high vehicle traffic.

2. Medicinal use: Littleleaf boxwood is used in folk medicine to treat cardiovascular disease, malaria, syphilis, rheumatism, dermatitis, and rabies, among others. Sitting in a basin with an infusion of this medicine to treat early-stage syphilis, vaginal inflammation, and vaginal tightening has achieved relatively good results.

Propagation methods for littleleaf boxwood

1. Cuttage: For littleleaf boxwood, take cuttings and insert them immediately in mid-April and late June. The insertion depth is 3-4 cm. Before inserting, water the bed thoroughly; after inserting, water to seal the soil; then build an arched frame over the bed. Water thoroughly once every 7 days, at a temperature of 20-30°C and a relative humidity of 75-85%.

2. Sowing: Sow littleleaf boxwood in early to mid-September. Soak the seeds in clean water for 30 hours, then evenly scatter them into the furrows. After lightly treading them down, cover with 1 cm of soil, then cover the seedbed with rice straw, and finally water thoroughly once with a watering can. After that, water thoroughly over the straw 2-3 times each week until rooting occurs.

Planting methods for littleleaf boxwood

1. Soil: For littleleaf boxwood, it is advisable to choose a plot that is open on all sides, has sufficient sunlight, and has good soil and water-fertilizer conditions. Remove weeds and gravel, apply decomposed base fertilizer, level the ground, and deep plow to ensure the relative soil moisture content is 75-80%.

2. Planting: Planting littleleaf boxwood seedlings is mainly done in spring, generally two or three days before “Qingming” in early April. For open-field planting, the plant spacing and row spacing are generally 0.5×1.5 or 0.4×1.2 m, with about 1000-1500 plants planted per mu.

3. Watering: For littleleaf boxwood, water should be replenished in time from April to June, during the budding to flowering period. From June to September, spray the foliage as much as possible without allowing water to accumulate. From October to November, water should be appropriately controlled. Water for winter should be given at the end of November, and water for green-up should be given in mid-March of the following year.

4. Topdressing: For littleleaf boxwood, in combination with watering, apply an additional 45 kg of diammonium phosphate and 30 kg of urea per hectare, applying the fertilizer in split applications. Urea should be stopped after July to prevent excessive seedling growth, which would leave the seedlings unable to lignify in time when winter arrives and make them prone to cold damage.

⟦NL>5. Weeding: Littleleaf boxwood is weeded 4-5 times throughout the year, with the principle of removing all weeds from the nursery land. Weeding should not damage the roots of the seedlings. Weeding somewhat deeply can raise the ground temperature and help accelerate the growth of littleleaf boxwood seedlings.

6. Pruning: Littleleaf boxwood has a very strong apical dominance, strong sprouting ability, and relatively weak branching ability. Through proper shaping and pruning, an ideal main trunk and full side branches can be cultivated, making the tree body complete, symmetrical, compact, and firm.

7. Overwintering: In some areas, because winters are cold and the temperature difference between day and night is large, for 2-year-old littleleaf boxwood, protective measures should be taken before overwintering, such as building a frame with bamboo poles and covering it with non-woven fabric before winter, and pressing down the bottom edges of the non-woven fabric all around.
