How to grow double-season water bamboo? The latest planting technique and method tutorial is here
Water bamboo has two types: autumn-producing single-season water bamboo and autumn-summer double-season water bamboo. Both are propagated by division. In the Yangtze River basin, single-season water bamboo is divided into clumps and planted from Qingming to Guyu, while summer-autumn double-season water bamboo can be planted in two seasons, spring and autumn, with spring planting around Guyu and autumn planting around Liqiu. Below, let us take a look together at the double-season water bamboo planting technique!
Growth characteristics of water bamboo
1. Roots: The roots of water bamboo mainly grow in two locations, one type grows on the underground stem, and the other grows on the perennial root. The roots are 20-70 cm long. The root system of water bamboo is very developed and is the organ by which water bamboo fully absorbs nutrients.
2. Stems: Water bamboo has two kinds of stems, one is the underground stem, and the other is the aboveground stem. The underground stem is also called the underground creeping stem. The tip of the creeping stem can also emerge from the ground and produce water bamboo. The aboveground stem forms a moss tube on the surface, called the perennial rhizome, on which leaves are borne, and water bamboo is also borne on the perennial rhizome. Water bamboo can tiller, and its tillering ability is very strong. Tillers produced from basal leaves are called primary tillers, and the basal leaves of primary tillers can also tiller into secondary tillers, forming the basic seedlings.
3. Leaves: The leaves of water bamboo are relatively long and are divided into leaf blade, leaf sheath, and leaf cushion. The leaf blade has parallel veins. The leaf is 100-150 cm long and 3-3.5 cm wide.
4. Temperature, moisture, and nutrients: The suitable temperature for the growth of water bamboo is 20-25°C, and the air humidity is above 85%. It especially likes water, so it must grow in water, but the water must not be too deep. In swampy land, the water bamboo field should generally maintain an appropriate water layer. When forming the shoot, the water layer should be deeper, and when tillering, the water layer should be shallower. When summer temperatures are high, water bamboo is prone to disease, so it is necessary to ventilate, pull off yellow leaves, and irrigate deep water to lower the temperature, so as to facilitate the growth of water bamboo. Water bamboo needs to grow in paddy fields rich in organic matter and with fertile soil. Increasing the application of potassium fertilizer has an obvious yield-increasing effect on the vigorous growth of water bamboo and the white and tender color of water bamboo.
5. Shoot formation: When water bamboo grows to a certain extent and the climate is suitable, it will form shoots.
① Time of shoot formation: In summer, from the end of May and early June to the end of July, and autumn water bamboo can form shoots from August to October.
② Characteristics of shoot formation: When the temperature begins to turn cool in early to mid-September, with large day-night temperature differences, nutrients in the water bamboo begin to accumulate, and the accumulated nutrients are transferred and transported to the flower stem. The stem base of the water bamboo gradually becomes flat, which old farmers call flat stalk. After another 3-5 days, the middle of the stem begins to swell until it turns white, thus forming water bamboo. In essence, the process of shoot formation is that the smut fungus in the water bamboo, the thick-walled spores produced by the smut fungus, and the mycelium produced invade the growth point of the water bamboo. The mycelium secretes indoleacetic acid, stimulating the flower stem, and the flower stem swells, thus forming water bamboo. Water bamboo is a fleshy stem and can be eaten as a vegetable.
③ Shoot formation is related to temperature. The most suitable temperature for shoot formation of water bamboo is 24-25°C, with humidity of 85-95%. Too high or too low will affect shoot formation.
④ Shoot formation is related to fertilization. Over-fertilization and over-leanness will also affect shoot formation, especially for summer water bamboo. Attention should be paid to the fertilizer for shoot formation. Poor application will delay shoot formation, and excessive fertilization will affect yield.
⑤ Shoot formation is related to management. This includes the management of water, fertilizer, diseases, insect pests, and weeds. If the field has no water and is too dry, the root system will grow deep, easily causing reversion and turning into stubborn water bamboo. If it is over-fertilized and fertilization is excessive, the smut fungus cannot stimulate it, and it will not form shoots. If it is over-lean and less growth nutrients are accumulated, it will also not form shoots. If the field is overgrown with weeds, the water bamboo will not grow well and will not produce water bamboo.
Double-season water bamboo planting technique
1. Seedling selection: Nursery raising by temporary planting. The temporary planting time is between New Year's Day and January 20. The introduced water bamboo seed clumps are temporarily raised in a seedling field. The temporary planting field should be easy to irrigate, able to retain water, and most of the seed clumps should be inserted into the mud and arranged well. Fertilize and irrigate to overwinter, and they can sprout in February of the next year. Water must never be cut off in winter, ensuring that each clump produces more than 8-20 seedlings.
2. Field preparation: For the field to be planted with water bamboo, normally plow 5-6 cun deep in winter, and level the high and low areas so that after irrigation the water reaches one level.
3. Building field ridges, beating the field bottom, and covering field ridges
① Building field ridges: Begin building field ridges, beating the field bottom, and covering field ridges in mid-to-late March. Use the raw soil below the tillage layer to build ridges around the field with a height of 50 cm, a bottom width of 60-80 cm, and a top width of 40 cm. The ridges should be built smooth and firm, and tamped solid with quicklime. After irrigation, they should not fall, collapse, or leak water.
② Beating the field bottom: If the field is near a river or ditch, or if the field or section has underground ditches, the field bottom must be beaten, that is, take out the topsoil, spread quicklime powder on the raw mud part, and compact it layer by layer with a stone hammer to prevent water and fertilizer leakage.
③ Covering field ridges: After the ridges are built, if there is bright sunny weather, use loose soil from the field to pack both sides of the ridges firmly to prevent sun cracking.
⟦NL>4. Base fertilizer: Base fertilizer can be 3-5 tons of cow dung or 150 loads of human urine and feces or 60 loads of chicken manure, spread evenly. If base fertilizer is lacking, use 100-150 jin of compound fertilizer with an N, P, K content of 45%, break up the soil finely, level it, and then prepare to irrigate and cultivate water bamboo.
5. Planting cuttings: The planting time is April 15-20, with a density of 1 m × 0.5 m. The seedlings are dug out from the temporary planting, then divided into clumps, with about 4 seedlings per clump, and planted the same day. When planting water bamboo seedlings, irrigate to level the field soil, then plant the cuttings. When planting, the water layer should be shallow. Plant seedlings in shallow water, set points with a line, with one mark every 1 meter on a line, and 0.5 m per row, so the basic seedlings per mu are 5000 seedlings. Do not plant too deep when inserting; it is enough for the moss tube to be in the mud. If too shallow, it will fall over when the wind blows. After two days, the fallen seedlings can be replanted. After planting, immediately irrigate deep water to help them survive.
