Introduction to the Four Latest Propagation Methods for Ginkgo
Ginkgo is a green plant commonly seen in cities nowadays. Its growth cycle is especially slow. The editor has a ginkgo tree at the door of his home that has been growing for 20 years, and its trunk can still be held with two hands. Today, what the editor brings you is the propagation methods for ginkgo.
1. Cuttage
Cuttage means cutting branches from a ginkgo tree that has already grown for many years and inserting them into soil, so that the branches take root and sprout in the soil to form a new tree. Cuttage is further divided into hardwood cuttage and softwood cuttage. Hardwood cuttage is mostly used to cultivate large quantities of trees for various commercial uses, while softwood cuttage is used for household and individual planting. Hardwood cuttage is suitable in spring. Select relatively well-grown branches from a large tree and cut them into cuttings about 20 cm long. After cutting, rinse them clean with water and then soak them in ABT rooting powder. Then insert them into soil, and in about a month or so they will take root and sprout. Then carry out normal care and management. Softwood cuttage is to cut softwood branches and insert them into a container, changing the water every 3 days, until roots grow and then transplanting them into soil.
2. Division
Division propagation is generally used to cultivate what is needed for urban greening, because ginkgo trees often produce suckers, especially trees around 15 years old. The method is to scrape away the soil around the tree roots, use a relatively sharp knife to cut the suckers off the tree, and then plant them elsewhere for cultivation and management. This method can generally produce fruit earlier.
3. Grafting
Grafting is generally used for large-scale production of ginkgo nuts. The grafting time is usually in summer, but note that grafting cannot be carried out when the temperature is very high, especially at noon, and it is also not suitable on rainy days. The main method is to cut off a leaf from a well-developed branch, leaving only the petiole, and wrap the cut leaf joint with a wet cloth or put it in water. It is best to choose cuttage seedlings as the grafting subject. After grafting, seal the joint with plastic wrap or other film cloth, and then carry out normal care and management. It will generally bear fruit in 6-7 years.
4. Sowing
Sowing is mainly used for building greenery and bonsai. Collect seeds in autumn, remove the outer seed coat, dry the seeds in the sun, and sow in winter or spring. When sowing, place the seeds in dug trenches or holes at a depth of 3-4 cm, cover them with soil, and tread the soil thick and firm. After one year, the saplings can grow to about 30 cm, and then transplanting can begin. However, the drainage system of the sowing site must be good, and water must not accumulate, otherwise the saplings will be rotted.
The propagation methods for ginkgo are roughly the above four. As for which method is better, it still depends on your planting direction. If you want to sell trees, then use the cuttage method, and it should be hardwood cuttage. If the main purpose is to produce fruit, then use the grafting method. The four methods vary from person to person. I hope these can help you.
