We generally use ginkgo trees for landscaping and scenic areas, and they can also produce fruit. Ginkgo nuts are extremely high in nutritional value and are a very popular nut today, often called white fruit. The leaves of the ginkgo tree are small and fan-shaped, and when they fall they look like dancing butterflies, a truly beautiful sight. Nowadays ginkgo is planted very widely, but it is said that ginkgo takes many years to bloom and bear fruit, which is quite remarkable. So today let us follow Qinnong Web to take a look at what needs attention when planting ginkgo.

1. Seedling selection

The ginkgo tree has a very long growth cycle and an extremely slow growth rate, so its growing period is longer than that of ordinary trees. Therefore, when selecting saplings we must be very careful, otherwise it is very likely that the ginkgo tree will die before it blooms and bears fruit, or that the survival rate will be low right from the start of planting. We usually choose seedlings that are relatively thick and sturdy, with a relatively straight trunk, a well-developed root system and a red color. Only these are high-quality seedlings, and the survival rate will be much higher.

2. Planting

Before planting we need to prepare the ground well. Dig holes at a row spacing of 3 m to 4 m and a plant spacing of 2 m to 3 m, with the holes 60 cm deep and 60 cm wide. Then scatter in a sufficient amount of organic compost, cover it with a layer of fine soil about 5 cm thick, then place the ginkgo seedling into the dug hole and fill it with soil. Finally water it once so that the soil has a certain moisture, and the survival rate of planting this way will be higher, and the growth rate will be relatively faster.

3. Light

Ginkgo is a light-loving plant, and during its growth it is best to have sufficient light. So we should plant it in a sunny area, and it is best if the ventilation is also strong. In this way the ginkgo tree can fully carry out photosynthesis, thereby growing more robustly, and together with photosynthesis this can speed up its growth rate. Finally, it cannot grow in a shady environment for a long time, as this will make its growth rate even slower, and the plant will become more and more fragile, greatly increasing the mortality rate.

4. Fertilizer and water

Ginkgo trees are mainly fertilized with organic fertilizer and farmyard manure, with about two topdressings a year. When fertilizing, note that ring fertilization or hole fertilization is usually used, as this helps the ginkgo tree absorb nutrients, and the nutrients are also less likely to be exhausted. During the growth of the ginkgo tree, it needs sufficient water, so it needs to be watered frequently, which is also a big difference between it and many other saplings. Usually watering once every 3 to 4 days is best.

5. Disease prevention

The ginkgo tree has relatively strong resistance, so pests and diseases rarely occur. However, in the hot and rainy summer season, viral diseases or fungal infections such as dead-leaf disease and leaf spot disease may also occur. First, we can prune the branches and leaves in the garden through orchard management to enhance the air permeability in the garden. Second, promptly drain excess water. Finally, use Bordeaux mixture for prevention and control. Its most common pest is the white grub, which we can control with trichlorfon or dimethoate emulsion.
