Cherries not only have high nutritional value but also taste quite good, making them deeply loved by consumers, and their price has remained high, offering promising prospects for cultivation. So where do cherries come from? How should they be cultivated and managed for good quality?

I. Where do cherries come from?

1. Cherry producing areas

In China, cherry producing areas are mainly concentrated in Shandong, Liaoning, Hebei, Beijing, Shanxi, Jiangsu, Anhui, Sichuan, Henan, Hebei, Gansu, Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Hubei, Zhejiang and other regions. Among them, Shandong is the main producing area of cherries in China and is also the most famous.

2. Cherry varieties

The main cherry varieties include Hongdeng, Zaohong Baoshi, Meizao, Daihong Large Cherry, Jinshan Large Cherry, Zaodaguo, Qinying No. 1, Brooks, Zaoshengfan, Fuchen, Molly and others.

II. How should cherries be cultivated and managed?

1. Soil and plot requirements for cherries

For planting cherries, choose a plot with fertile soil, deep soil layers and good drainage and irrigation, with suitable acidity and alkalinity, and a pH value between 6 and 7.5. Note that cherries cannot be planted in heavy clay soil, which is not conducive to nutrient uptake by the roots.

2. Planting time requirements for cherries

Cherries are more suitable for planting in the two seasons of spring and autumn. In places that are dry, windy and cold in winter, spring planting should be chosen, while for places where winter is relatively warm, autumn planting should be chosen.

3. Cultivation requirements for cherries

(1) Apply base fertilizer well

First deeply plow the soil, and after it matures, dig large planting holes, then apply organic fertilizer into the holes at a rate of 30-50kg. Only after fully mixing the soil and fertilizer can the seedlings be planted, and at the same time water thoroughly with enough settling water.

(2) Dig holes and plant seedlings

If the fruit seedlings are within 2 years old, the planting holes only need to be 40cm wide and 30cm deep; if the seedlings are 3-4 years old, planting holes 70cm wide and 50cm deep should be dug. In addition, pay attention to planting density; generally about 200 plants per mu is relatively suitable.

4. Daily management of cherries

(1) Fertilization

Base fertilizer should be applied from mid-September to late October each year, so that tree vigor is enhanced and more nutrients accumulate in the plant. Before budding and flowering, apply quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer, such as poultry and livestock manure water; during the rapid fruit growth period, apply a topdressing of quick-acting chemical fertilizer once, while adding a certain amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer. After harvesting the fruit, poultry and livestock manure and barnyard manure must be applied immediately, while applying a certain amount of chemical fertilizer at the same time.

(2) Pest and disease control

Common cherry diseases include anthracnose, cherry leaf spot, bacterial shot hole, gummosis, and root crown rot.

Common cherry pests include white peach scale, slug moths, peach red-necked longhorn beetle, apple clearwing moth, golden-bordered jewel beetle, scarab beetles, and peach fruit moth.

It is recommended to use appropriate harmless pesticides for control.
