Hami melon is sweet and delicious, full of moisture, crisp and refreshing, and rich in nutrients, making it one of the fruits loved by the public. So, where is the origin distribution of Hami melon? What are the planting time and key planting points? Let's find out together!

1. Origin distribution of Hami melon

Hami melon is widely cultivated throughout China, and the one produced in Hami is the most famous, hence the name Hami melon. In Xinjiang, except for a few high-cold areas, most regions produce Hami melon. High-quality Hami melons are produced in Shixian in southern Xinjiang, the Hami and Turpan Basins, and the area around Shihezi is also quite good.

2. Origin environment of Hami melon

Hami melon has very high environmental requirements. It needs many natural conditions such as high summer temperatures, dry air, scarce rainfall, and long sunshine hours. It likes ample sunlight and a large day-night temperature difference. During the day, it can fully carry out photosynthesis, while at night respiration consumption is relatively small, which is conducive to nutrient accumulation. It is mainly produced in Hami, Turpan, Shanshan and other places in Xinjiang, where rainfall is low and the day-night temperature difference is large.

3. Planting time of Hami melon

Sow at the right time. Generally, sowing can be done after the late frost, when the soil temperature 10 cm below the surface is stable at about 14°C. For melon fields covered with plastic film, sowing can be done around April 20. If plastic film is not used, the sowing period can be appropriately delayed. For winter melons intended for storage, the sowing period can be postponed to around May 20.

4. Key planting points of Hami melon

1. Seedbed management

Spring seedling raising emphasizes heat preservation and disease prevention. The seedbed uses multiple layers of film covering, and electric heating wires are laid on the ground. Before emergence, the seedbed temperature should be maintained at 30-32°C during the day and 18-20°C at night to promote uniform emergence. Before the first true leaf unfolds, the bed temperature should be appropriately lowered, maintained between 25-28°C during the day and 15-16°C at night, to prevent leggy seedlings. Up to the appearance of the third true leaf, the bed temperature should be appropriately raised, maintained between 30-32°C during the day and 18-20°C at night, to promote the early emergence of true leaves. One week before planting, carry out low-temperature hardening of the seedlings so that the young plants gradually adapt to field environmental conditions.

2. Water management

During the seedling stage, moisture must be strictly controlled. Water according to the dry and wet condition of the seedbed pots. If relatively dry, water an appropriate amount before noon on a sunny day. After watering, wait until the moisture on the plant surface and soil surface evaporates and the water marks dry up before covering with plastic film again.

3. Humidity and light

Ventilation to reduce humidity is the key to preventing seedling diseases. Therefore, after uniform emergence, within the range permitted by bed temperature, the plastic film of the small tunnel should be opened as much as possible to increase ventilation and reduce the air humidity of the seedbed. During rainy and overcast weather, short periods of ventilation should also be carried out around noon to reduce humidity and increase light.
