A Detailed Introduction to the Flower Language and Legend of the Bellflower
The bellflower (Campanula) is a plant with blue flowers and five petals, commonly found in the mountainous areas of southwestern China, with about twenty or so varieties. Bellflowers are mainly used for decorating flower beds and courtyards; they look like little bells and are very beautiful. Nowadays, some people also grow them in pots at home to add a touch of charm to indoor spaces. So what is the flower language and legend of the bellflower? How should you care for it so it grows well?
I. Introduction to the Flower Language and Legend of the Bellflower
1. The flower language of the bellflower
The flower language of the bellflower is tender love, gratitude, and so on. Because the flowers of the bellflower are mostly in warm tones, it is a symbol of tenderness and health. The flower language of the bellflower also represents blessings from afar, because the wind will carry beautiful blessings to the person you want to send them to, and it also signifies the return of gratitude, so it is also suitable as a gift between friends.
2. The legend of the bellflower
According to legend, the sun god Apollo was very fond of the bellflower, and the west wind was very jealous, so it threw a disc onto the bellflower's head. At that moment, much blood splattered out, and many bellflowers grew from the ground, so it also carries the meaning of jealousy.
II. How Do You Care for Bellflowers So They Grow Well?
1. Soil
Bellflowers generally do well in environments with good looseness, good drainage, and relatively moist conditions, and slightly acidic or neutral soil is especially good. If the soil is acidic, lime water needs to be added to neutralize it. So a mix of ordinary garden soil, orchard soil, sandy loam, and the like is relatively good, and mixing in animal manure is an especially good base fertilizer.
2. Watering conditions
After bellflowers sprout, you only need to keep the soil slightly moist. Be sure not to water too much, to avoid excessive water accumulation, otherwise the whole plant may die. But the seedling stage also cannot go without water; especially in a dry environment, bellflowers can easily wilt, and after a long time they definitely cannot be saved. So watering should be determined according to the soil moisture and growth conditions.
3. Topdressing
Besides giving enough base fertilizer to bellflowers, proper topdressing is necessary, especially in the season of vigorous growth. Generally, fertilizing once a month can promote their growth, and you can also appropriately spray the leaves to promote leaf growth. For fertilizing, try to choose relatively dilute nitrogen-potassium fertilizer; of course, animal or human manure is also fine. Summer temperatures are too high, so be sure not to fertilize under high temperatures, to avoid the whole plant wilting or being scorched.
4. Light and temperature
Bellflowers grow relatively well when there is plenty of sunlight, and they bloom more vigorously, so you must give them enough light.
Bellflowers cannot tolerate high temperatures while growing, but they tolerate low temperatures. As long as the winter temperature does not fall below three degrees Celsius, they can grow; otherwise they will enter a self-protective dormant period.
