What fertilizer is best for pennywort? Choosing the right fertilizer is the key to vigorous growth
For fertilizing pennywort, nitrogen fertilizer is the main choice, with appropriate use of fertilizers containing potassium. Generally, during its peak growing season, apply a top dressing every 2-3 weeks. When applying, you can directly water with diluted fertilizer, or bury the fertilizer in the soil.
Pennywort growing methods:
1. Soil preparation
For soil preparation, you can use a mixed substrate made from leaf mold, river mud, and garden soil in a ratio by volume of 0.5:2:2. It tolerates moisture and is an emergent type, so it is also suitable for growing in water basins and ponds. If grown in water, be sure to change the water once a week and add a special nutrient solution for foliage plants.
2. Fertilizing
Pennywort has a relatively high demand for fertilizer; during the vigorous growth stage, apply a top dressing every 2-3 weeks. If planted in a pot or container, then only a small amount of fertilizer is needed, such as the quick-acting fertilizer Hyponex No. 2, which can maintain its fertilizing effect in water for a relatively long time and ensure the water quality is slightly acidic or neutral.
3. Watering
In summer, spray the plant frequently to maintain relatively high air humidity; in winter, the potting soil should preferably be on the dry side. Follow the principle of preferring moist over dry when watering, and avoid waterlogging, otherwise the roots are prone to rot.
4. Pruning
Pennywort generally does not need extensive pruning. When the leaves become too dense, promptly remove withered lower leaves and the outer layer of old and diseased leaves to improve light and ventilation conditions. In spring, when the roots fill the pot, repot and divide and shape the plant. If the plant grows too tall, prune it back to encourage new shoots to sprout from the base of the stems and leaves.
5. Pest and disease control
Pennywort has strong adaptability and relatively few pests and diseases, so generally good routine care is all that is needed.
