How to Grow a Dragon Tree (Dracaena draco)? Growing Methods and Precautions
For modern indoor decoration, besides placing suitable ornaments, green plants like the dragon tree are also excellent decorations, and they can even purify the air. So do you know how to grow a dragon tree?
How to grow a dragon tree?
1. Soil
The dragon tree requires loose, fertile, highly permeable sandy soil. Repot and change the soil once every 2-3 years, using loose, slightly acidic sandy loam mixed with 20% decomposed organic base fertilizer. Apply a small amount of topdressing during the growing season, and apply 200-300 times diluted ferrous sulfate water 1-2 times a year to prevent yellow leaf disease (iron deficiency).
2. Water and Fertilizer
In spring, water once every half a month or more. From late spring to summer, the peak growing season, give it plenty of light; water when the soil is dry, keep the soil moist, and mist the leaves morning and evening; apply a diluted liquid fertilizer once every ten days. After autumn begins, gradually reduce watering frequency and amount; give it full direct sunlight; mist appropriately when temperatures are high. In winter, control the amount and frequency of watering, about once every half a month.
3. Light and Temperature
The optimal growing temperature in winter is around 15°C, with a minimum of 5-10°C, because too low a temperature will cause yellow-brown patches to appear on the leaves; the temperature should be maintained at 15-25°C, and shade should be provided during strong sun. In other seasons and conditions, sunlight exposure can be given, which will help it grow better.
The dragon tree grows relatively slowly, and generally takes about 10 years of cultivation before it blooms. But its plant shape is graceful, and besides being grown as a potted plant, it can also be planted as a garden plant.
