Where did grapes originate? A detailed explanation of the main producing regions
The famous poet Li Bai once wrote: “From afar I see the Han River green as a duck's head, just like grapes newly fermenting into wine.” Since ancient times, grapes have been a fruit people love. So where did grapes originate?
Grapes originated in the region of Europe, West Asia and North Africa. According to archaeological data, the earliest area where grapes were cultivated was the region of Asia Minor between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea and along their southern shores. About 7,000 years ago, the regions of the South Caucasus, Central Asia, Syria and Iraq also began cultivating grapes. Most historians believe that Persia (present-day Iran) was the first country to make wine. The first country in Europe to begin cultivating grapes and making wine was Greece.
