When building a chicken farm, the first thing to consider is the site selection, and site selection must be determined according to the farm's rearing scale and rearing purpose (whether raising commercial broilers, commercial layers, or breeding chickens, etc.). Whether the site selection is appropriate affects sanitation and disease prevention, the growth of the chickens, and the work efficiency of the keepers, and it bears on the success and profitability of chicken rearing.

Site selection should take comprehensive factors into account, such as area, terrain, soil, orientation, transportation, water source, power supply, disease prevention conditions, natural disasters, and the economic environment. In general, site selection should follow the principles below.

(1) It should be conducive to disease prevention. A chicken farm site should not be chosen in densely populated residential areas or areas with concentrated factories, should not be chosen in places with frequent traffic, and should not be chosen near livestock and poultry trading venues; it is best chosen in a relatively remote place that vehicles can still reach. Such a place is not easily affected by infectious diseases and is conducive to disease prevention.

(2) The site should be high, dry, and well drained. In plains, choose a place with high, dry terrain that slopes slightly to the south or southeast; in mountainous and hilly areas, choose a south-facing slope with an incline of less than 20 degrees. Such a place facilitates drainage and sunlight, staying warm in winter and cool in summer. It is best if there is a fish pond within the site to facilitate waste discharge, enable waste reuse, and support integrated operations.

(3) There should be shade within the site. It is best to have green bamboo, green trees for shade, and grassland within the site to facilitate the chickens' activity.

(4) The site must have a water source and a power supply. A chicken farm needs water and electricity, so it must have a water source and a power supply. The water source should preferably be tap water; if there is no tap water, choose a place with abundant groundwater suitable for digging a well, and the water quality must meet sanitation requirements.

(5) The site area must be able to be enclosed. The site should be an independent, self-contained closed system (enclosed with bamboo or brick walls) to prevent outsiders from entering at will and to prevent outside livestock, poultry, and wild animals from entering at will.
