The common bean, also known as the second-season bean, green bean, kidney bean, pole bean, sword bean, hyacinth bean, jade bean, and long bean, is a widely grown vegetable in China. Below we introduce its cultivation techniques. What are the cultivation techniques for common beans? 1. Site selection and land preparation Choose a site with a temperature of 10-15°C, annual rainfall of 850-1000mm, sandy loam or loam soil as suitable, soil organic matter content above 1.5%, and soil pH of 5.5-7.0. Then plow the plot, apply base fertilizer, and after the fertilizer is applied, cover with about 20 cm of soil before sowing.

What are the cultivation techniques for common beans?

1. Site selection and land preparation

Choose a site with a temperature of 10-15°C, annual rainfall of 850-1000mm, sandy loam or loam soil as suitable, soil organic matter content above 1.5%, and soil pH of 5.5-7.0. Then plow the plot, apply base fertilizer, and after the fertilizer is applied, cover with about 20 cm of soil before sowing.

2. Seed selection and sowing

Before sowing, select the seeds by hand to ensure seed viability, purity, and resistance to disease and rodents. Choose plump, glossy, pest-free large seeds and sun-dry them for 1-2 days. The planting time is mainly constrained by temperature. In the Northwest and Northeast regions, cultivation is in spring and summer; in North China, the Yangtze River basin, and South China, both spring and autumn sowing are practiced. Either direct sowing or seedling transplanting is acceptable.

3. Cultivation and weeding

One week after sowing, spray the soil surface with 150ml/mu of butachlor plus a 1000-fold dilution of phoxim (or other similar agents, preferably biological preparations) to prevent weeds and underground pests.

4. Watering

Common bean seedlings are relatively drought-tolerant; if there is too much water, the seedlings turn yellow and the leaves weaken. The flowering stage requires more water and is sensitive to wind; long drought without rain and much wind result in poor growth and easy dropping of flowers and pods, but too much water can also cause root rot. For flat fields, clear the ditches and drain in time to prevent waterlogging from making the common bean plants weak with yellow leaves and affecting quality.

5. Fertilization

Apply about 1500 kg of farm manure and 40-50 kg of compound fertilizer (30 kg phosphate fertilizer, 10-15 kg potassium fertilizer) per mu as base fertilizer. For topdressing, apply compound fertilizer twice appropriately at the early flowering stage and the pod-setting stage, 10-15 kg per mu each time.

The cultivation techniques for common beans are not very difficult; generally, doing the above points well is enough. Did you learn something after reading this!
