The Cordyline has a beautiful plant shape, with gorgeous and elegant colors. Its leaves are patterned, the plant form is elegant, bright and vivid, and the whole plant has a red stem, giving people a striking feeling. Cordyline is a common plant with good ornamental value, so what should we pay attention to when growing a Cordyline well?

How to Grow Cordyline

Red-leaf Cordyline likes warmth and humidity, likes light and also tolerates shade, but is not cold-tolerant. In winter, it must be kept above 10°C indoors to survive the winter. Red-leaf Cordyline can endure dark conditions for 15 days. During storage and transport, the temperature should be kept at 16-18°C, with a relative humidity of 80%-90%.

Red-leaf Cordyline is mainly propagated by cuttings, which can be done from June to October. Cut old plants whose lower leaves have fallen off into sections about 5 cm long. After the cut surface dries slightly, insert them into sandy soil or vermiculite, or lay them horizontally in the substrate and cover lightly with soil. Keep the temperature at about 25°C and maintain a certain humidity, and roots will form and new plants will emerge in 3 weeks. It can also be propagated by air layering and sowing.

Red-leaf Cordyline is relatively easy to cultivate. Use a potting soil mix of 2 parts leaf mold and 1 part sand or sawdust, making it slightly acidic. Cordyline likes light and grows vigorously under conditions of sufficient light and high humidity, but too strong sunlight in summer is not good for its growth, and the leaves easily age and darken, so shading should be noted. During the growing season, in addition to watering to keep the soil moist, fertilizer should be applied once every half month. When the weather is dry, water should be sprayed on the leaves to increase humidity. In winter, place it indoors in a place with sufficient light, reduce watering, and keep it dry rather than wet. If in a poorly ventilated environment, the plant is prone to scale insects, so attention should be paid to prevention and control.

Red-leaf Cordyline likes sufficient light, but in summer and autumn it should be properly shaded (shading degree about 50%); exposure to scorching sun easily causes leaf burn and yellowing. It can also tolerate shade, but if the light is too weak for a long time, the color will not be vivid. In hot and dry climates, Cordyline often suffers from scale insects or red spider mites, so attention should be paid to spraying pesticides for prevention and control.

Cordyline Cultivation Methods and Precautions

Cultivation methods:

Cordyline likes sufficient light, but in summer and autumn it should be properly shaded (shading degree about 50%); exposure to scorching sun easily causes leaf burn and yellowing. It can also tolerate shade, but if the light is too weak for a long time, the color will not be vivid. In hot and dry climates, Cordyline often suffers from scale insects or red spider mites, so attention should be paid to spraying pesticides for prevention and control.

Precautions:

1. The suitable growth temperature for Cordyline is 20-25°C. In summer, it can be 25-30°C during the day, and in winter, the nighttime temperature should be 7-10°C. It cannot be lower than 4°C, and some varieties can tolerate a low temperature of 0°C.

2. Lack of water in Cordyline easily causes leaf drop, but too much water or water accumulation in the pot also causes leaf drop or yellowing of leaf tips. During the growth period of stems and leaves, water should be sprayed frequently, and an air humidity of 50%-60% is more suitable.

3. Cordyline has a strong ability to adapt to light. Short periods of strong light or longer periods of semi-shade have little effect on its growth. Proper shading at midday in summer and reducing light intensity are extremely beneficial to leaf growth.

4. The cultivation soil for Cordyline should preferably be fertile, loose, and well-drained sandy loam. It is not tolerant of saline-alkali and acidic soil. For pot cultivation, a mixed soil of leaf mold or peat soil with culture soil and coarse sand is commonly used.

What to Do If Cordyline Roots Rot

1. Pour out all the water, then disinfect the bottle. It is best to use potassium permanganate solution; if not available, soak it in concentrated salt water for half a day.

2. Wash the bottle thoroughly.

3. For flower branches, check whether there is any rot, remove the rotten parts, then gently brush a few times from top to bottom with a soft-bristled brush, and rinse clean. If there are rotten roots or rotten branches, remove them. If conditions permit, spray a few times with alcohol, then rinse after a few seconds.

4. Insert it back, and if conditions permit, place a few pebbles or shells.

How to Prune Cordyline

Cordyline is a foliage plant and tolerates pruning, but its branches and leaves are limited. Cutting too much will affect its appearance and is not good for photosynthesis. When pruning, use scissors to cut quickly and evenly at the base of the leaf stalk.

Water-grown Cordyline likes stagnant water. After rooting, it should not be given fresh water changes; when water evaporates and decreases, only add water in time. Frequent water changes easily cause yellow leaves and withered branches. To prevent leggy growth, do not apply chemical fertilizer. It is best to inject a few drops of brandy into the bottle about every 3 weeks and add a small amount of nutrient solution, which can keep the leaves green.

After soil-grown plants root, a small amount of compound fertilizer should be applied in time, so that the stems grow thick and strong and the leaves are glossy green. In spring and autumn, applying compound fertilizer once a month is enough. Do not place Cordyline next to a TV or in a place where air conditioning often blows, so as to avoid dry and withered leaf tips and leaf edges.

After the tedious work of each day, looking up and accidentally encountering a Cordyline, its bright colors are like summer sunlight, passionate and unrestrained, bringing people a good mood. To grow a Cordyline well, it is not only necessary to understand its growth habits and cultivation methods, but also to treat and water it carefully in daily life.
