In our daily life, there are many kinds of flowers and plants, and many people like to grow some beautiful plants at home as ornamental pieces, but most soil-grown plants are inevitably prone to dirtying the room during care, so some flower lovers prefer plants that can be grown in water. Phalaenopsis is a kind of orchid, with graceful flower posture and dazzling flower colors, so can Phalaenopsis be grown in water?

Can Phalaenopsis be grown in water

Phalaenopsis can be grown in water, but you need to master the correct water culture method.

Water culture method for Phalaenopsis

1. Clean the root system

First use clean water to thoroughly wash the growing medium from the roots of the Phalaenopsis, carefully remove the dead roots and rotten roots, and if conditions permit, flower lovers can also soak the roots in a fungicide, then place the plant in a cool place to dry.

2. Choose a water culture container

When choosing a water culture container, it is more recommended to use a transparent glass bottle. The advantage is that you can clearly see the growth of the roots at any time, and secondly the light transmission helps the roots grow, making the roots develop more beautifully.

3. Fix the plant

Then carefully insert the dried plant into the chosen container. At this time there may be the problem that the plant cannot be fixed well. There are two solutions for this.

1. If the size of the plant and the container are relatively suitable, no extra fixing measures are needed, and the support of the Phalaenopsis leaves is enough;

2. If conditions permit, use a suitable planting basket with the chosen container;

3. You can also take iron wire of appropriate thickness and bend it into a ring shape, winding from the roots to the stem, then hook it on the mouth of the container; the winding method can be based on personal circumstances.

4. Rooting and growing leaves

After all the above work is done properly, you can enter the long waiting process. The time of the seedling recovery period is determined by the original state of the plant, so it will vary. Generally, new roots and new leaves appear in 2-4 weeks.

Semi-water culture method for Phalaenopsis

When growing Phalaenopsis as a semi-water culture, you must first deal with the Phalaenopsis plant properly. Remove the residual water moss and other residues on the Phalaenopsis plant, then prune the roots, cut off the diseased roots and rotten roots, wash them clean with water, and cut off the diseased leaves

Note that after treatment, the plant should be left to dry the wounds, and it is best to apply some charcoal.

Choose a container, which can be a plastic bottle. Divide it into two, remove the middle part, then punch a few small holes in the shoulder of the bottle.

Put some broken brick pieces in the upper part of the plastic bottle, then plant the plant into the plastic bottle, placing it on the brick pieces. Then put charcoal on top and press it firm.

Note that you do not need to water, just spray water on the leaves. After a few days, you can put some water in the bottom of the plastic bottle, and note that the roots should not touch the water. In this way, the water at the bottom of the plastic bottle turns into vapor to replenish water for the Phalaenopsis. And the few holes in the upper part of the plastic bottle can ensure that the water vapor is connected up and down.

Precautions for water culture of Phalaenopsis

1. Temperature: when the temperature is lower in winter, note that the humidity should be smaller. The main reason is that if the roots have already grown into the water, the roots soaking in water at low temperature are prone to rot.

2. Fertilizing: liquid fertilizer can be sprayed on the leaf surface, and solid granular fertilizer (such as Magic Fertilizer) can be placed directly in the water in the container or wrapped in a fertilizer packet and tied to the roots.

3. Cleaning: after a long time of water culture, moss will grow in the water, on the container surface and on the water roots. After adding fertilizer it grows faster, and it needs to be cleaned regularly, otherwise the water roots will rot.

4. Flower spike: fixing the flower spike of a water-cultured Phalaenopsis is a problem. In fact, whether to support it or tie it can be done according to personal aesthetics.

In fact, many plants can be grown both in soil and in water, such as Phalaenopsis, pothos, lucky bamboo, anthurium, and so on. For friends who mind the mess of soil culture, you can grow them in water. Not only is it clean and beautiful, but it is also easier to care for and manage!
