For planting the color-changing gourd, sandy soil with good drainage and irrigation is the first choice. First carry out deep plowing to a depth of no less than 20cm, disinfect, then apply sufficient base fertilizer, promptly remove residual chemicals, and it is ready for planting. Before sowing, soak the seeds first to promote germination. After they sprout, arrange the planting density reasonably, dig holes and plant. When the seedlings grow to about 25cm, a trellis can be set up to help them grow. The most stable ""-shaped trellis method is generally used. Later, prune appropriately according to the plant's growth and tree shape.

1. Growing conditions

The color-changing gourd has low requirements for soil. Because its root system is very well developed, it can grow normally in most soils. Planting it in sandy soil with good drainage and irrigation conditions can increase its yield. After choosing the land, carry out deep plowing to a depth of no less than 20cm, expose it to the sun to sterilize and kill insect eggs, then apply sufficient fertilizer, do a good job of ridging and compacting, and promptly remove residual herbicide to prevent herbicide damage. The color-changing gourd is not suitable for continuous cropping. Planting sites whose previous crop was grain crops such as corn and wheat are all suitable for planting it.

2. Raising seedlings and sowing

Before sowing, soak the seeds first to promote germination. First put the seeds into warm water at about 50°C and stir continuously for about 12 minutes, then put them into warm water at about 35°C and soak for about 7 hours. Scoop them out with a wet cloth, place them at room temperature of 25°C to promote germination, and rinse once a day with warm water at 30°C. When 80% of the seeds have germinated, they are ready for sowing. When sowing, keep the depth at about 10cm and the temperature at about 8-10°C. Arrange the planting density reasonably, dig holes and plant, place the seeds flat, and cover with a layer of fine soil, which helps promote rooting and retains water and fertilizer.

3. Trellis method

When the color-changing gourd seedlings grow to about 25cm, a trellis can be set up to help them grow, because it is a vining plant. We generally use the most stable "人"-shaped trellis method. Note that the trellis poles and the seedlings should keep a distance of about 8cm. Before setting up the trellis, in order to stabilize the frame, first carry out intertillage and weeding, and water. After the trellis is set up, prepare to tie the vines. First remove the tendrils of the gourd, and lower the height of the plant to prevent excessive growth. Properly tying the vines is beneficial to the growth of the color-changing gourd and increases the yield.

4. Pruning the plant

The color-changing gourd plant can be pruned appropriately to provide it with more growing space, which is beneficial for better nutrient absorption and improves its quality and yield. Later, prune appropriately according to the plant's growth and tree shape, and then promptly thin flowers and fruits so that the number of flowers and fruits is within what the plant can bear. When the leaves increase, promptly remove the growing point of the main vine to prevent excessive growth, so that nutrients can be absorbed better.
