Edible Mushrooms Grown in Idle Tobacco Curing Barns Bring Good Returns to Tobacco Farmers in Shanghang, Fujian
Shanghang County in Fujian Province is one of the key tobacco-producing counties in China, with over a thousand intensive tobacco curing barns and several thousand curing rooms; however, the curing period lasts only four months from May to August, leaving the remaining eight months idle with low utilisation rates. To improve the utilisation rate of the curing barns and realise the benefits of construction investment, the Sanfeng Tobacco Farmers' Professional Cooperative in Lupeng She Ethnic Township, Shanghang County began trials in the autumn and winter of 2014, growing wood ear mushrooms and oyster mushrooms in the idle intensive curing barns, achieving initial success and good returns.
