How to Plant Yellowhorn Tree Seeds? A Detailed Guide to the Planting Method
The yellowhorn tree (Xanthoceras sorbifolium) is a deciduous shrub or small tree of the genus Xanthoceras in the family Sapindaceae, reaching a height of up to 5 m. It bears fruit in early autumn, and the fruit contains seeds that are black and glossy. So, how do you plant yellowhorn tree seeds?
1. Site selection
The yellowhorn tree is highly adaptable to soil, tolerant of poor and saline-alkaline soils, but not of waterlogging, and it fears wind. It should not be planted in poorly drained low-lying areas, heavily saline-alkaline land or unstabilized sand dunes. However, plots with deep soil, fertile soil, shelter from wind and sun exposure, flat terrain, good drainage and convenient irrigation are suitable, with neutral or slightly alkaline soil. Deep plow the selected plot to a depth of 25 cm-30 cm.
2. Stratification to promote germination
Generally, select relatively robust trees and collect the seeds after the fruit ripens in autumn. Dry them well and sow immediately, or store the seeds in sand and sow in the following spring. Before sowing, promote germination first. You can wrap the seeds in moist sand for sand storage and place them in a sunny spot, using high temperatures to promote germination; you can also soak them in warm water, remove them after cooling for 2-3 hours, cover them with a wet cloth and place them in a greenhouse to promote germination.
3. Sowing
If using high-temperature germination, sow when 20% of the seeds have split open; if using warm-water soaking to promote germination, sow when 2/3 of the seeds have split open. Before sowing, first choose a suitable growing medium, then place the seeds in it with the hilum facing flat upward, cover with 2-15 cm of thin soil, water thoroughly, and wait for the seedlings to emerge.
4. Fertilizer and water
Once the seedlings have all emerged, water appropriately with a light watering to prevent excessive soil moisture, which can cause root-collar rot and lead to seedling lodging. During the seedling growth period, apply topdressing 2-3 times. Stop irrigation and fertilization in September, and water once with winter water before the soil freezes in November.
