Sichuan pepper is a very common seasoning in daily life and one of the indispensable ingredients for hot pot. Many people grow Sichuan pepper, so what are the methods and precautions for planting Sichuan pepper?

1. Planting methods for Sichuan pepper

Sichuan pepper can be propagated by four methods: sowing, grafting, cuttings and division. In production, sowing is the main method.

1. Sowing: Seed treatment. Sichuan pepper seed coats are hard, oily and impermeable to water, so germination is relatively difficult. Before sowing, the seeds must first be degreased and stored. Soak the seeds in alkaline water, then wash them clean and sow.

2. Grafting: Bud grafting and scion grafting are generally used. For bud grafting, the “T” shape and “Z’’ shape are often used; for scion grafting, cleft grafting, cut grafting and side grafting are commonly used.

3. Cuttings: From Sichuan pepper trees under 5 years old that have already fruited, select 1-year-old branches as cuttings. The cuttings can be soaked in 500mg/L indoleacetic acid for 30 minutes, or in 500mg/L naphthaleneacetic acid for 2 hours, or the hotbed rooting method can be used. Treated cuttings have a high rate of rooting and seedling formation.

4. Division: Before Sichuan pepper sprouts in spring, girdle the base of 1-2-year-old sucker seedlings, bury them in soil, and let new roots grow from the girdled wound. After 1 growing season, separate the sucker seedlings from the mother tree and they can be used for planting. Another method is to cut 2/3 of the base of the sucker seedling with a sharp knife and then earth it up to encourage rooting. After the sucker seedling is cut away from the mother tree, if the root system has grown well, it can be transplanted directly; if the root system has not grown well, it can be heeled in in a nursery until more new roots develop before transplanting.

2. Precautions

1. Overwintering management: For water and fertilizer management in autumn, after Sichuan pepper trees enter July, topdressing with nitrogen fertilizer should be stopped to prevent excessive growth in the later season. At the same time, base fertilizer should be applied as early as possible in September-October, which helps improve the nutritional level of the tree.

2. Pruning: In summer, prune promptly along with harvesting Sichuan pepper. For weak trees, cut off some large branches and diseased or pest-damaged branches, and in autumn remove excess large branches again, finally keeping 5-7 main branches per tree. At the same time, appropriately thin out dense branches within the crown, generally removing no more than 25%, and cut back some weak branches to strong buds; for moderate-vigor trees, medium and short branches are generally not cut back, with thinning as the main approach, and attention should be paid to protecting the terminal bud. Long fruiting branches should be appropriately cut back, retaining large buds.

3. Fertilization: Fertilizing before and after the flowering period is the most important stage. Of course, the fertilizer should mainly be nitrogen fertilizer, mainly because the nutrients in nitrogen fertilizer can increase the fruit-setting rate of Sichuan pepper. If some fertilizer is applied before Sichuan pepper blooms, it can supplement the tree body and prevent the later fruit-setting rate from being low due to insufficient nutrition. Then, if another topdressing is carried out after the flowering period, it can effectively ensure the nutritional needs of Sichuan pepper fruits during growth and development. Of course, fertilization after Sichuan pepper blooms should be a little less, and a little phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should also be added during fertilization.

Planting Sichuan pepper is relatively simple; just carry out appropriate management according to its growth conditions.
