In most cases, the flower meaning of carnations is love, charm and respect, and they are also known as the Mother's Day flower. Generally, red carnations represent love and care, while pink carnations represent immortal maternal love. When giving flowers to an elder female relative, carnations are absolutely the most suitable flower variety.
3. How to Grow Carnations in Pots
1. Environment: Carnations prefer an environment with dry air, good ventilation and sufficient sunlight, and they dislike high temperatures and excessive moisture. The most suitable growing temperature is 19-21°C.
2. Soil: The growing soil should retain nutrients, allow air circulation and drain well, and be rich in humus.
3. Pot selection: Choose a tall pot with a relatively large inner diameter, and first apply enough base fertilizer containing potassium, calcium, nitrogen and phosphorus at the bottom of the pot.
4. Fertilizing: During the growing period, alternately apply diluted urea water, ash from burned wheat straw, or sauce residue fertilizer once every half month. It is worth noting that carnations should not be given concentrated fertilizer.
5. Watering: After transplanting, water once a day on sunny days to keep the potting soil moist. The potting soil must not become waterlogged, otherwise the roots are prone to rot.
6. Light: Ensure 6-8 hours of light every day. In midsummer, carnations are in a semi-dormant state, and at this time care should be taken to avoid exposure to the scorching sun.
7. Pinching buds: To encourage branching, remove the top when the plant height is 15-20 cm. Generally, keep 6-7 lower side buds, then pinch the growing tips once more later, finally leaving the plant with 12-14 side branches. When buds are forming, keep only one terminal bud on each branch, and remove all lower axillary side buds and side shoots. The second pinching must be done before mid-August.
