Petunia Seed Prices and Planting Methods Explained
Petunia is an ornamental flower with a funnel-like shape and brilliantly colored blooms, particularly suitable for planting in flower beds, courtyards and other landscape settings, and it is grown all over the world. There are many varieties of petunia, and they are generally propagated by seed, so what about petunia seed prices and planting methods?
1. Petunia Seed Prices
There are many kinds of petunia, and the forms they display also vary; their flower color, size and plant height all differ, so petunia seed prices are not fixed. It depends specifically on which kind of petunia seed it is; generally they cost several hundred yuan per jin.
2. Petunia Seed Planting Methods
Petunia seeds are very small, so in principle plug trays can be used for sowing. But Lanyao suggests everyone not use plug trays, because a plug tray is a single unit, and if germination is uneven, it will bring a certain amount of difficulty to management.
1. Planting out
Before sowing petunia, first soak the sowing soil (do not make the sowing soil very wet; “soaked through, moistened” means it is best if no water can be squeezed out), and when sowing, one seed must go into one cell to avoid damaging the roots later when separating seedlings.
If the seeds are not coated, first moisten a toothpick with water, then use the wet toothpick (it must not carry water) to pick up one seed and place it in the seedling cell.
After placing pelleted seeds on the surface of the cell soil, use a dropper to drip a few drops of water (two or three drops is enough; do not use a spray bottle, use a dropper), and the coating will dissolve, which allows earlier germination and ensures the germination rate. Petunia sowing does not cover with soil; a lid can be put on, and it needs to be opened for one hour each day for ventilation.
2. Misting
Before germination, mist every day to ensure a certain humidity, which is good for seed germination. Use a small spray bottle for misting, and the water stream should be fine and dense to avoid washing the seeds away. Do not fill the soil in the seedling cells too full at first; if the seedlings become leggy, more soil can be added to prevent lodging.
3. Watering
If you want to harvest flower balls in the future, you must first make the seedlings strong, so management during the seedling stage is very important. We know that the roots, stems and leaves of plants are vegetative organs, with absorption, storage, conduction and assimilation functions respectively, and whether a seedling is strong depends on whether its root system is well developed.
4. Light
Petunia likes an environment with sufficient light. Whether potted or planted in the ground, it must receive sufficient light; ensuring more than 6 hours of direct sunlight every day can effectively promote petunia growth and flower bud differentiation. Friends growing it in pots should note that in summer light will raise the temperature inside the pot and accelerate water evaporation, causing petunia to lack water, so it should be watered once each in the morning and evening to ensure sufficient water.
5. Pest and disease control
Petunia is susceptible to infection by fungal diseases. Common diseases include white mold, leaf spot and viral disease, which requires fully disinfecting the soil before seed sowing. After disease occurs, diseased leaves should be removed promptly to prevent the disease from spreading, and fungicides such as chlorothalonil and amobam should be sprayed promptly. Viral disease is a secondary disease of aphids, caused by infection of wounds on the plant after aphids suck sap. Therefore, prevention of viral disease is carried out in sync with eliminating aphids. Generally, insecticides such as imidacloprid and omethoate are used to kill them.
