Hosta Flower Seed Prices and Planting Methods Explained
Hosta flower is also called Yu Chun Bang, White Crane Flower, Yu Pao Flower, and White Jade Hosta. It is an ornamental flower native to Japan. Hosta flowers can be planted under trees as ground cover, or planted in parks or beside buildings, and they are very beautiful. Let's take a look below at Hosta Flower Seed Prices and Planting Methods.
1. Hosta Flower Seed Prices
The market price of hosta seeds has always been very stable, with the price per jin of seeds remaining at around 450 yuan, which is still within a range most people can accept. Whether the annual output of hosta seeds increases or decreases; the size of the purchase quantity, with wholesale being cheaper than retail; the price of hosta seeds being higher during the peak planting season; and differences in batch, specification, and place of origin all make the price of hosta seeds different as well.
2. Hosta Flower Planting Methods
1. Potting soil
Hosta is not very strict about soil requirements, but if conditions allow, sandy loam rich in humus gives the best results. The potting soil used can be made from leaf mold, fine sand, and garden soil in a volume ratio of 1:1:1. Hosta has thick roots and a large crown spread, so a large flower pot is usually chosen for planting.
2. Water and fertilizer
Hosta likes a slightly moist soil environment and is not drought tolerant; insufficient watering easily causes the leaf tips to dry out. It does not need much fertilizer. In addition to applying about 50 grams of base fertilizer such as horse hoof slices at the base of the flower pot when planting, a thin liquid fertilizer should also be applied once every half month during the vigorous growth stage. After the plant sends up flower scapes, a little more phosphorus fertilizer can be applied appropriately, such as potassium dihydrogen phosphate, so the flowers will open better.
3. Temperature
It likes a shaded environment and is not tolerant of sunlight exposure, otherwise the leaves easily turn yellow. After autumn begins, as the temperature drops, hosta leaves gradually turn yellow and begin to wither, but the underground rhizome does not die, and it will sprout again after the weather warms up the following spring. It likes a warm environment and grows well within a temperature range of 15°C to 30°C. It is not afraid of severe cold and can tolerate a low temperature of -20°C.
4. Light
Hosta is a relatively good shade-loving plant. For open-air planting, a shaded spot not exposed to direct sunlight is best. Indoor potted plants can be placed in a bright indoor spot for viewing, but cannot be placed in a place with direct sunlight, otherwise the leaves will develop severe sunscald. After the weather gradually turns cold in late autumn, the leaves gradually wither and turn yellow. In winter, bring them indoors and they can overwinter in a cold room at 0-5°C, then be repotted and divided the following spring. For open-ground cultivation, a little covering can be added for overwintering.
5. Watering and fertilizing
During the growing season, apply a thin liquid fertilizer once every 7-10 days. During the spring germination period and before flowering, nitrogen fertilizer and a small amount of phosphorus fertilizer can be applied as a top dressing to promote green leaves and abundant flowers. In areas with little rainfall during the growing season, water frequently and loosen the soil to aid growth. In winter, control watering appropriately and stop fertilizing.
