Peppers are an important condiment in China and are widely grown in many places. People in Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou and other places cannot eat without spice. It can be said that peppers are a year-round bestseller. So, what are the key points of high-yield pepper cultivation techniques? Doing these well matters!

1. Timely shading

In a semi-shaded environment, peppers have stronger growth ability, a lower leaf drop rate, fewer pests and diseases, and a higher fruit-setting rate. According to professional data surveys, peppers grown in a semi-shaded environment have a per-plant yield about 1/5 higher than those grown in open fields. Therefore, when planting peppers, it is best to intercrop or relay crop them with tall crops such as corn. This can not only increase pepper yield, but also allow corn to be harvested, adding a source of economic income.

2. Reasonable close planting

Reasonable close planting makes good use of light and soil fertility and promotes coordinated development of pepper seedlings. This improves the fruit-setting rate of pepper seedlings and the quality of the peppers. Moreover, compared with sparse planting, reasonable close planting can appropriately reduce air temperature, soil temperature and light intensity during the high-temperature summer period, and is a necessary measure for high pepper yield.

3. Fertilizer and water management

When fertilizing, apply about 40kg of small pepper formula fertilizer at one time. During the seedling growth period of peppers, no additional fertilizer is needed. However, if the soil fertility is poor or its fertilizer retention capacity is weak, then water appropriately and combine it with an appropriate amount of quick-acting fertilizer. Then, about 10 days after the pepper seedlings are planted, they usually enter the seedling recovery stage. At this time, apply an appropriate amount of urea, then shallow hoe appropriately to speed up the growth of the pepper seedlings.

4. Four-main-branch pruning and shoot-thinning method

When fruit is set, select and retain 4 thick-growing branches with good orientation as main branches, cut off the remaining branches of the same level from the base, then keep 1-2 branches on each main branch and thin out the remaining branches of the same level.

5. Multi-main-branch pruning and shoot-thinning method

This method is suitable for ox horn pepper and goat horn pepper varieties. It can make them bear more fruit, develop a strong root system, grow well and yield high, but it also causes poorer air and light penetration and lower early yield. When fruit is set, select and retain 5-6 branches in different positions but thick and well oriented as main branches, cut off the remaining branches of the same level, keep 1-2 branches on each main branch as fruiting branches, and thin out the remaining branches as early as possible.

6. Intertillage and weeding

During the growth period of pepper seedlings, intertillage should be carried out at least about three times. The first intertillage should mainly be shallow hoeing, the second can be appropriately deeper, and at the third time, be careful not to damage the roots of the peppers. However, this mainly depends on the actual situation. If the soil becomes compacted after transplanting, then shallow hoe about twice, and hoe once more after the peppers branch out and are topped. Then, before the pepper rows close, do a good job of hilling soil to protect the roots and improve field drainage. This can not only avoid lodging of the peppers, but also improve the soil's water retention.

If you want peppers to achieve high yield, doing the above 6 field management tasks well is very important.
