Being able to eat fresh vegetables in the cold winter is mainly due to greenhouse cultivation, which makes vegetables available all year round. Watering management for greenhouse vegetables is very important, so how should winter greenhouse vegetables be watered? What should be noted?

1. Watering amount

Winter temperatures are relatively low, and during cultivation the rate of water evaporation from vegetables slows down somewhat, so their demand for water also decreases. Therefore, in winter we can appropriately reduce the amount of watering, and the watering frequency should also be slightly extended. When watering, drip irrigation with small water droplets should be the main method, to prevent excessive moisture, high humidity and low temperature from causing vegetables to suffer root rot and decay. In winter, it is enough to just meet the water needs of the vegetables, and it is best to combine water with fertilizer.

2. Watering time

The watering time for winter greenhouse vegetables also has certain requirements. Generally, we should water at noon, and the best watering time is from 10:00 to 15:00 each day. This is because the greenhouse temperature is relatively high during this period, which can help avoid frost damage. When watering, try to use well water, because well water has a relatively high temperature, and the water temperature can also be heated to about 10 degrees. This prevents the water temperature from being too low, which could make the vegetables unable to adapt and cause frost damage.

3. Water according to the weather

When watering, observe the weather conditions. On sunny days, the watering amount can be increased and the watering frequency reduced. On cloudy and rainy days, not only should you not water, but you should also do a good job of rain protection and drainage. Also, when the weather temperature gradually drops from high to low, reduce the watering amount in time to prevent excessive moisture from causing waterlogging and frost damage. Conversely, appropriately increase the watering amount to ensure sufficient moisture while also preventing frost damage, waterlogging and other problems in the vegetables.

4. Water according to growth conditions

Most vegetables have different water requirements at different growth stages, so we should also control the watering amount and adjust the watering method according to the growth conditions of the vegetables. Generally, leafy vegetables do not have a long growth cycle, so their water-demand period is relatively concentrated; their watering amount should be larger and the watering interval should be shorter. During the seedling stage, keep the soil moist to promote the seedlings' recovery. During the plant-establishment stage, control the watering amount. Then, during the fruit enlargement stage, increase the watering amount to ensure that the vegetables have sufficient and appropriate moisture for growth.

5. Watering position

The temperature difference in different positions within a greenhouse is relatively large, so when watering at different positions, there are also differences in watering amount and watering interval. In areas with longer sunlight exposure, the water evaporation rate is faster and the water requirement is greater, so the watering amount should be increased. However, in positions on the shady side, watering needs to be well controlled, and the watering amount should be reduced to prevent excessive moisture from affecting the growth of the vegetables.
