What are the common pests and diseases of blueberries and their control methods?
Blueberries have very high nutritional and health value and are loved by many people. In recent years, the planting area has continued to increase, and many fruit growers have begun to plant blueberries. So what common pests and diseases do blueberries have? What are the control methods?
1. Blueberry scorch virus
This virus can cause the death of leaves and flowers. Different varieties differ slightly in their resistance to it. Symptoms on affected plants appear mainly during the early spring flowering period, chiefly as flower wilt and a small amount of death, and the leaf margins of old leaves. As the plant grows, some varieties show continuous branch death, and some with weaker disease resistance often show death of most leaves and plant death within 3-6 years, while some varieties with strong disease resistance show only leaf chlorosis symptoms.
Control method: The best way to prevent it is to plant virus-free seedlings now. When planting, pay attention that there is no such improper condition nearby. Once affected plants are found, they should be removed and burned immediately, and aphids must be strictly controlled.
2. Blueberry leaf spot disease
So far, this disease occurs in relatively few areas, but once it breaks out, the damage is extremely severe. Within a few years of onset, the plant stems die until the whole plant dies. Different varieties have different disease resistance and show different symptoms. Some affected plants show death of perennial stems after 5-6 years, with new branches short and deformed, and leaves spotted; some varieties show milder symptoms, with less stem death, but the tree grows short, and because the internodes are shortened, the leaves are small and yellow-green.
Control method: This disease is mainly spread by the pollination activities of bees and bumblebees. It can be controlled by cutting off the transmission route, but the best method is to remove diseased plants.
3. Mosaic disease
Mosaic disease is also a disease that commonly occurs in blueberry production and can reduce yield by more than 15%. The main symptoms are leaves turning yellow-green or yellow and developing spots or ring-shaped scorch, sometimes with purple lesions. Symptoms also differ from year to year; in one year they may be severe, but the next year no symptoms appear.
Control method: This disease mainly spreads through aphids and virus-carrying seedlings, so using insecticides to control aphids and cultivating virus-free seedlings can effectively prevent its occurrence.
4. Red ringspot disease
This disease is one of the more common diseases in blueberry-producing areas of the United States. Once it breaks out, it can cause at least a quarter of the yield loss. When it occurs, the leaves on the branches often show ring-shaped red spots with green centers, and in the hot season, the upper half of old leaves also shows this symptom.
Control method: This disease is mainly spread by mealybugs, and another way is through virus-carrying seedlings. The main control methods are using virus-free seedlings and controlling mealybugs.
