Potted kumquat dropping leaves? Grow it this way for more fruit
Kumquat is a fruit rich in vitamin C, fortunellin and other components. It is widely grown in southern China and generally comes to market from October to December. In addition, potted kumquat also has a certain ornamental value, with its golden color and very good symbolism, and is deeply loved by some friends. So how do you grow potted kumquat so it bears more fruit? What should you do when it drops leaves?
1. How do you grow potted kumquat so it bears more fruit?
1. Enough growing space and light
Generally, ornamental potted kumquat plants are not large, with a relatively compact and somewhat smaller shape, but non-ornamental kumquat plants grow taller and can even reach over one meter in height. So if you want to grow this kind of kumquat indoors;
first of all, there must be a relatively large space, at least on a terrace or rooftop; as long as it is not an enclosed small balcony, it can be grown.
In addition, as long as there is enough light and there is sunlight on the balcony or terrace, you can grow a particularly vigorous potted kumquat.
2. Fertile potting soil, loosen the soil in time
If the potting soil decreases or becomes compacted and poor, loosen the soil once every six months. You can use wire, a thin stick or a trowel to loosen the soil around the pot to promote drainage and aeration, so that when you water, the water can seep down and the soil is less likely to become compacted.
The more you use fertile, loose leaf mold, peat soil or pine needle soil, the better the kumquat will grow, and repotting into a larger pot once every one or two years will promote healthier root growth and lush branches and leaves.
3. Prepare a slightly larger flower pot
In addition, prepare a relatively large flower pot, because kumquat is a tree, unlike ordinary small flowers and grasses for which a small flower pot is enough. The flower pot diameter should be at least 30 cm or more, and the potting soil should be fertile and loose. Only by continuously providing nutrients for kumquat growth can it bloom and bear fruit smoothly.
2. What should you do when potted kumquat drops leaves?
1. Kumquat must have enough sunlight, because without light no plant can produce photosynthetic nutrition, and without transpiration there is no physiological circulation among branches, leaves and roots.
2. During the growing season, watering should follow the natural sunny-and-rainy rule of “do not water when dry, water thoroughly when you do”. Overwintering is the dormant period; because evaporation is small and water demand is low, after moving it indoors you must strictly control watering and only keep it slightly moist, to prevent waterlogging from rotting the roots.
3. During overwintering, it is in the dormant period and has stopped growing, so it must not be fertilized; during the growing season, it is better to use a mild, slightly acidic organic fertilizer. All plants fear concentrated fertilizer that “burns roots”. Chemical fertilizers are inorganic neutral or alkaline fertilizers, and long-term application will make the potting soil compacted; improper application can very easily burn the roots and kill the plant.
4. In order to promote growth and produce more fruit, during the growing season, while it must be placed in a sunny spot to receive more sunlight, you must also shade the flower pot well, to prevent the roots in the potting soil from easily exceeding 37 degrees under direct sun and suffering heatstroke and root death.
