Water-grown plants save you the hassle of repotting: these four are pretty and easy to grow
These days many people like to keep some flowers and plants at home, since they are both pleasing to the eye and purify the air, but repotting potted plants is rather a hassle. In fact, you can choose to grow hydroponic plants. Let's take a look below at four hydroponic plants that are both pretty and easy to grow.
1. Golden-edge lucky bamboo
Golden-edge lucky bamboo, also known as Sander's dracaena (Dracaena sanderiana) and bordered ti plant, is an evergreen shrub. The plant is upright and slender and generally does not branch. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, and the edges of the green leaves bear yellow longitudinal stripes. Another commonly cultivated form is lucky bamboo, a bud sport of golden-edge lucky bamboo, with dark green leaves. Silver-edge lucky bamboo is a compact plant whose leaf edges are bordered with silvery-white longitudinal stripes. Golden-edge lucky bamboo likes high temperatures and high humidity, and overly dry air will cause the leaf tips to scorch. In summer, avoid direct sunlight, otherwise the leaves will be scorched, but it is best to give it plenty of bright indirect light. When light is insufficient, the colored stripes will fade. When growing lucky bamboo in water, you can cut stems of a suitable length and insert them in water; roots will sprout in a little over 10 days.
2. Spider plant
Spider plant, also known as ribbon plant, is a perennial evergreen herb. The leaves are basal, linear to strap-shaped lanceolate, clasping the stem at the base, and green. Flower stalks emerge from the leaf axils, with white flowers that turn into stolons after blooming, and several new plantlets with aerial roots form at the tips. Common varieties include: golden-centered spider plant, whose leaves have yellow longitudinal stripes in the center; silver-edge spider plant, with greenish-white leaf margins; and golden-edge spider plant, with yellowish-white leaf margins. Spider plant likes warm, humid and semi-shady conditions. The optimum temperature for growth is 15~25 °C, and the overwintering temperature should not be lower than 0 °C. It fears dry air; if humidity is too low, severe tip scorching will occur. Avoid direct sun in summer, otherwise the leaves will turn pale yellow and scorch. For growing spider plant in water, you can choose the small plantlets produced on the stolons for cultivation, because the aerial roots on the plantlets growing on the stolons are very well suited to water-growing conditions, making cultivation very convenient. Potted plants can also be washed free of soil and placed in water for cultivation, but you need to change the water frequently and promptly cut away any rotted roots; only after new roots sprout in the water can normal care be resumed.
3. Swiss cheese plant
Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) is an evergreen woody climber. The stems are thick and jointed like bamboo, with slender columnar aerial roots growing at the nodes. The leaves have pinnate notches and oval perforations between the veins; the leaves are thick and leathery and droop slightly. Swiss cheese plant likes warm, humid and semi-shady conditions and fears direct sunlight, otherwise the leaves turn sallow and scorch. The suitable temperature for growth is 25 °C. Swiss cheese plant is very well suited to water-growing conditions; soil-grown plants can be washed free of soil and grown in water, and new roots will emerge in about half a month. You can also cut a section of stem, keep the aerial roots, and root it in water for cultivation. Swiss cheese plant has fairly large leaves, so when growing it in water, use a thick, heavy container to prevent it from tipping over.
4. Arrowhead plant
Arrowhead plant, also known as arrowleaf vine and white-veined arrowhead plant, is a perennial evergreen herbaceous climber with short stem nodes, and the nodes bear aerial roots that emerge from the middle of the base of the leaf stalk. The leaves have long stalks with a sheath at the lower part; the leaf blade is broadly arrow-shaped, thin in texture, pale green with a white-green center and a green underside. Silver-white arrowhead plant likes semi-shady conditions and hot, humid weather; the suitable temperature is 15~25 °C, and it fears cold, with leaves beginning to turn yellow below 10 °C. In spring and autumn you can cut stems and insert them in water, and new roots will sprout in about a week. You can also wash potted plants and grow them in water; silver-white arrowhead plant has a fairly well-developed root system, so about 1/3 of the roots should be cut away.
