Lucky bamboo is evergreen all year round, and its name implies “great fortune and prosperity”. It is not only highly ornamental but also simple to grow, making it a household potted plant cultivated by the vast majority of people. So how do you grow lucky bamboo in water?

1. Growing Methods

1. During the growing season of the lucky bamboo plant, cut off a section of long stem with nodes and insert it into a transparent container filled with clean water, then remove the leaves at the base. Change the clean water once every 3-4 days, and do not move the position or change the direction within 10 days. After about 15 days, new roots can grow from the old roots. New hydroponic roots are milky white, while old roots are reddish-brown, creating a pleasing contrast.

2. Select an already established soil-grown lucky bamboo, dig out the whole plant and wash the roots, then plant it in a transparent container. It can quickly adapt to the hydroponic environment and grow hydroponic roots.

2. Care Details

1. Temperature and Light

The suitable temperature for lucky bamboo growth is 22-28°C. Summer is the best time for its growth. In winter it can survive at 2-3°C, but frost must be prevented. Lucky bamboo does not have high light requirements; it grows best under bright, scattered light. If sunlight is too strong, it will cause the leaves to turn yellow and lose their green color.

2. Fertilizing

To prevent lucky bamboo from growing leggy, it is best not to fertilize. Every 3 weeks, add a small amount of nutrient solution to the bottle, or grind an aspirin tablet or vitamin C tablet into powder and dissolve it in 500g of water, then add a few drops when watering.

3. Changing Water

After lucky bamboo has rooted, it should not be moved to fresh water; simply add water after the water evaporates. When adding tap water, it is best to first store the tap water in a container for a day so that the water temperature is closer to room temperature before use. To prevent hydroponic lucky bamboo from growing leggy, it is best to drip a few drops of baijiu into the container about every 3 weeks, plus a small amount of nutrient solution, which will keep the leaves green. When the air is dry, spray water on the leaves. During vigorous growth in midsummer, avoid direct strong light and increase the frequency of spraying, which can prevent the leaf tips from scorching.

4. Pest and Disease Control

The most common problems for lucky bamboo are anthracnose and leaf spot disease. Anthracnose first appears mostly at the leaf tips or on the leaves, initially as dark green irregular lesions, and gradually spreads to the entire leaf surface; in the middle stage it is semicircular or irregular in shape with clear boundaries; in the later stage the outer edge of the lesion forms a yellow halo. If not controlled in time, it will spread to the whole plant and seriously affect its appearance. Leaf spot disease first shows brown spots on the leaves with yellow edges. After the disease spreads, the spots become nearly round, gray inside and brown outside. If conditions are humid, black granular matter will also appear on the leaves.

Lucky bamboo is a very easy plant to grow. During cultivation, attention should be paid to the details. Changing the water and fertilizing are both very important.
