White strawberries look as if they are unripe strawberries, but in fact they are a new variety developed through mutation and cultivation. They have a sweet flavor and melt in the mouth, and are widely praised by consumers. So how much is the price of white strawberries per jin in 2020? What are the planting prospects? What are the cultivation techniques?

1. How much is the price of white strawberries per jin in 2020

White strawberries can be called the “internet-famous new luxury” of the strawberry world in recent years, and their value has long been highly sought after. They not only have a unique and beautiful appearance, but also an excellent flavor. At present, their selling price is similar to that of ordinary new strawberry varieties, about 40-50 yuan per jin. Of course, prices for white strawberries also differ due to factors such as variety and place of origin. For example, Japan's Danshaku strawberries have become something of a luxury item, once selling for 29,000 yen for 9 berries (about 1,700 yuan).

2. Planting prospects for white strawberries

White strawberries have now also been introduced and planted in our country. Their planting cycle is 8 months, and the average minimum yield per mu is about 1,600 kg. At present, the wholesale price of white strawberries on the market is 80-160 yuan/kg, which can be said to have reached an astronomical price. In Japan, a single berry sells for 1,500 yen, which converts to more than 90 yuan per berry. During holidays they are a hot-selling product, and there have even been situations where demand exceeds supply, so their market prospects are very broad.

3. Cultivation techniques for white strawberries

1. Site selection and land preparation

The strawberry garden should preferably be chosen with sufficient light, slightly higher terrain, level ground, convenient irrigation and drainage, fertile and loose soil, and a previous crop of beans or onion and garlic vegetables. The garden should first be cleared of weeds and underground pests eliminated. A 1,000-fold dilution of 50% phoxim emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed (moistening the soil layer 5-6 cm deep) to control white grubs, mole crickets, and cutworms.

After 1 week, apply per mu a base fertilizer of 5,000 kg of high-quality decomposed farmyard manure, 100 kg of superphosphate, and 50 kg of potassium chloride. Combine with deep plowing of the garden and fine land preparation, and form beds 20 cm high and 50 cm wide, with furrows 30 cm wide. The length of the greenhouse should be limited to 20 m, with 4 beds inside.

2. Transplanting techniques

In order to strive for strawberries to come to market from the end of January to early February, the time for transplanting strawberry seedlings from the propagation nursery onto the greenhouse beds should be in early September. Seedlings should be lifted and transplanted immediately. Plant 2 rows per bed, with a row spacing of 27 cm and a hole spacing of 20 cm, planting 12,000 plants per mu. When planting, the inflorescences of plants in the same row should face the same direction, so that the arched back of the strawberry seedling faces the intended growth direction of the inflorescence, the crown of the seedling is exposed above the bed surface, and the root system is spread flat and buried in the loose soil layer. Water immediately after planting, and bury exposed roots into the soil layer.

3. Management before and during early flower bud differentiation

For strawberry seedlings transplanted in early September, in addition to timely supplementary watering, a shade net should be added for shading. The net should be 1.2 m above the ground for easy operation by workers. Dead leaves, old leaves, axillary buds, and runners should be removed in time, keeping 5-6 leaves. Flower bud differentiation requires lower temperatures and short-day conditions, so straw mats (straw curtains) can be added on top of the shade net. Through the process of uncovering and covering the straw mats, short-day conditions and lower temperatures are artificially created to promote the differentiation of the terminal inflorescence and axillary inflorescences, over a period of more than a month.

4. Irrigation and drainage methods

During flowering and the early stage of berry growth, irrigate once each. Furrow irrigation is preferable, with water filled to 2/3 of the furrow height, allowing water to gradually seep into the bed soil, and draining the remaining water in the furrow. If there is drought, irrigate once every 5-7 days. Fit a section of metal pipe onto the front end of a rubber hose for hole irrigation, which saves water and helps keep the bed soil loose. During rainy autumn periods, drain promptly. Drainage ditches should be prepared early around the strawberry garden so that the water in the furrows inside the greenhouse can be fully drained.

5. Adding plastic film

From October to early November, at the end of the strawberry inflorescence differentiation period, the shade net can be removed. In the Jianghuai region, cover with ground film after “Start of Winter” and cover with greenhouse film before “Major Snow,” keeping the temperature inside the greenhouse at 28-30°C. In “warm winter” years, add middle greenhouse plastic film at “Winter Solstice.” In “cold winter” years, both large and middle greenhouse plastic films should be covered at the same time. In short, from “Minor Cold” to “Major Cold,” the temperature inside the greenhouse should be kept above 25°C, and at least above 23°C. Only when the above temperatures are met can strawberries grow normally.

6. Ventilation operations

The soil moisture for strawberry seedling growth should preferably be 70%-80%. The air humidity inside the greenhouse should preferably be 60%-70%. Therefore, when the temperature inside the greenhouse exceeds 30°C, ventilation should be carried out. From November to December, the plastic film at both ends of the large and middle greenhouses should be opened from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ventilation. When the humidity inside the greenhouse exceeds 70%, ventilation should also be carried out to reduce the air humidity inside the greenhouse. During the flowering period, bees can be kept inside the greenhouse, and nylon mesh can be added at both ends of the large and middle greenhouses to facilitate smooth ventilation. Another function of greenhouse ventilation is to prevent and control strawberry powdery mildew.

7. Harvesting

From flowering and fruit set to the berries coloring, softening, and releasing their distinctive fragrance, the time is about 30 days. After the strawberry berries mature, they should be harvested in batches for market.

White strawberries have a very unique appearance and flavor and are very popular among consumers. Growers who are interested can try planting them.
