As a common cut flower and edible flower, roses are cultivated in many parts of our country. Recently, the news that ancient roses in a deep mountain rock crevice have bloomed has attracted everyone's attention! So where is this thousand-year rose located? Has it really grown for a thousand years? Can it be grafted? Let's take a look below.

1. Ancient rose blooms in a deep mountain rock crevice!

Pingyin in Shandong has a history of cultivating roses for more than a thousand years, and now the “ancestors” of these roses are hidden on the slope of a deep mountain. Decades ago, this primitive rose still covered the entire mountain, but later, in pursuit of higher yields, it was replaced with grafted roses. Only a tiny patch of the primitive rose remains.

2. Where exactly is the thousand-year rose in the deep mountain rock crevice located?

The thousand-year rose in the deep mountain rock crevice is located on the slope of a deep mountain in Pingyin, Shandong, and Pingyin County sits in the transitional zone between the western extension of the Tai Mountain range and the Luxi Plain. Within the area, hills and ridges roll and crisscross, covering most of the county. Apart from the areas along the Yellow River and the Hui River basin in the east, which are alluvial-proluvial plains and local low-lying areas, the rest is low mountain and hilly terrain. The elevation is generally 100 m to 250 m, with the highest point, Dazhai Mountain, at 494.8 m, and the lowest point, Chengxi Depression, at 35.5 m. The soil is mainly brown soil, with a soil layer thickness mostly above 100 cm and some plots above 60 cm, high organic matter content, loose and deep soil, and strong water and fertilizer retention capacity, making it suitable for rose growth.

3. Can the thousand-year rose in the deep mountain rock crevice be grafted?

The thousand-year rose in the deep mountain rock crevice can be grafted, and most of the artificially planted roses currently grown in Shanyin are improved through grafting of this wild rose. The grafting methods for roses are as follows:

1. Bud grafting

Every 5-9 days, select plump buds from a superior mother plant and cut them off, then graft 1-2 buds onto a Baiyutang or rose rootstock. Alternatively, on a long branch of the rootstock, graft one bud every 8-10 cm. After the grafts take, cut the branches with the successfully grafted buds into sections and, as with the general cutting method, insert them into a sand bed or container.

2. Branch grafting

Every spring, cut grafting, tongue grafting, and side grafting can be used to graft branches of superior varieties onto rootstocks such as rose and Baiyutang.

3. Root grafting

During the dormant period of roses in winter and spring, indoors, tie the scion onto a root of a rose or Baiyutang. After binding it well, heel it in at the base, keep it in a medium-temperature greenhouse, and maintain moisture. After the graft union heals, pot it or plant it in the field.

At present, Pingyin roses have dozens of varieties, among which the purple-branch rose can bloom in spring, summer, and autumn; while Fenghua No. 1 can bloom multiple times, and its flowering period can last until October. So friends who like roses may want to visit Pingyin in Shandong during the holidays.
