Pomelo, also known as Shatian pomelo, pao, wentan, and zhuluan, is not only sweet and refreshingly tart in taste but also has the effect of reducing internal heat, and its nutritional value is very rich as well. So, what are the cultivation techniques for pomelo? How can it be grown for high yield?

1. What Are the Cultivation Techniques for Pomelo?

1. Seed propagation to cultivate seedling trees

Collect ripe fruit, then peel off the rind to gather the seeds, and store them in a cool, shaded place. When it is time to sow, choose a spot with a water source and fertile, loose soil to set up the nursery, first deep-plowing and then applying base fertilizer.

2. Layering

The air layering method can be used. For layering, select 3~4-year-old upright, upward-growing branches from the upper and middle parts of the canopy of a superior mother tree, cut horizontally more than 1/2 of the trunk diameter, then split upward vertically to a length slightly shorter than the layer (bamboo tube or plastic film), or perform ring barking, then put on a layering pot filled with loose, broken soil and keep it moist.

The sowing period varies by region; for example, in Guangxi, Fujian and other places, because of autumn and winter drought and strong sunlight, it can be appropriately advanced.

3. Field planting

Pomelo is often planted in the open spaces in front of and behind houses. For site selection, choose shady slopes or semi-shady slopes with deep soil. In autumn, cut and heel in the plants, and after one year of cultivation, carry out field planting, using planting holes 1 m wide and 1.5 m deep, applying sufficient base fertilizer in each hole, 59 kg of organic fertilizer and 0.5~1 kg of superphosphate, then filling with soil.

Field planting time is generally chosen in spring from February to March or in autumn. When planting, the root crown of the plant should be level with the ground, and the root system should not come into direct contact with the thick base fertilizer. The row and plant spacing for field planting is 7x5 m or 6x5 m, with about 19~22 plants planted per mu.

2. How to Grow Pomelo for High Yield?

1. Site selection for planting

Now that you understand the cultivation techniques for pomelo, how can it be grown for high yield? The preparatory work before planting is essential. Before planting, we first choose a piece of land with fertile soil and sufficient water for planting. If the site is poorly chosen, it will greatly affect the yield of pomelo.

2. Planting spacing

Many growers often harbor wishful thinking when planting pomelo saplings, because they think that planting more pomelo on the same-sized piece of land will bring a bigger harvest. Little do they know that this practice is very wrong, because unreasonable planting spacing will affect the photosynthesis of pomelo tree leaves, thereby affecting the fruit quality and yield of pomelo.

Having read this far, everyone surely has some understanding. In the process of growing pomelo, we may also encounter some problems, such as small details during planting and later cultivation and management work, none of which can be ignored. We must treat them with a serious and earnest attitude, and understand the importance of being down-to-earth in order to harvest more.
