How to Ripen Kiwifruit? Save These Few Practical Tips
Unripe kiwifruit is hard and sour, while ripe kiwifruit is bursting with sweetness and juice. So once you bring them home, how do you ripen kiwifruit? Let me teach you a few practical tips! Save this for later!
1. Introduction to Kiwifruit
Kiwifruit is also known as Chinese gooseberry. China is the place of origin of kiwifruit, and it was introduced to New Zealand in the early 20th century. The fruit is generally oval in shape, yellow-brown when young and reddish-brown when ripe, with a dense covering of fuzz on the skin. The flesh is edible, with bright green flesh inside and a row of black or red seeds. Because macaques like to eat it, it is called kiwifruit. Another saying is that it got its name because the skin is covered with fuzz and looks like a macaque. It is a fruit with tender quality, rich nutrition and delicious flavor.
2. How Do You Ripen Kiwifruit?
1. Fruit ripening method
Hard kiwifruit can be ripened together with 3 kinds of fruit: apples, pears and bananas. Take a plastic storage bag and put the kiwifruit together with an already ripe banana, then loosely close the opening of the bag. Do not seal it completely, as complete sealing will make the fruit spoil. Then leave it at room temperature for a period of time. When the kiwifruit feels a little soft when squeezed, it is ready to eat. Note that once the kiwifruit becomes soft, take it out immediately to avoid over-ripening and spoilage.
2. Rice ripening method
Put the kiwifruit into a plastic storage bag, tie the opening tightly, then put it into rice and “bury” it. It usually ripens in two or three days. If you have millet at home, you can directly “bury” the kiwifruit in the millet, and it ripens especially quickly.
3. High-temperature ripening
Put the kiwifruit into a plastic storage bag, loosely close the opening, and do not seal it completely. Then place the bag in a warmer place to ripen. Different varieties of kiwifruit have different temperature requirements. The lower the temperature, the longer they keep; higher temperatures make them ripen more easily, but generally it is best not to exceed 30°C.
4. Ethylene ripening
Put the kiwifruit in an environment sprayed with ethylene, or soak the kiwifruit in liquid ethylene for 2 minutes, then leave it for a period of time and the kiwifruit will ripen.
In addition, if you are eating them at home, it is generally better to choose the first fruit ripening method, because it has no side effects, is simple and convenient, and makes it easy to control the ripeness of the kiwifruit.
