On how to make flower stalks taller, my own thoughts - Sanyueshi http://www.dfac.cc/showtopic-116-410288-0-0-1.htm
I started growing orchids in 2007, not long ago, not much experience, what I say may be somewhat biased, please forgive me.
From 2007 to 2009, I always grew orchids on a balcony. In 2010, after moving to the first floor, I set up an 8 sq m orchid room in the small courtyard. I will talk about my own thoughts on how to make flower stalks taller.
First, I think what affects flower stalks the most is temperature, followed by humidity. Flower buds are most sensitive to temperature.
To make flower stalks taller, the temperature must not be too high, do not exceed 20 degrees, best around a high of 15 degrees, with a low between 5-10 degrees, so the flower buds open relatively slowly and are easier to make taller; once the temperature is too high, the flower buds, in order to catch up with spring, open as soon as they come out of the bud sheath. Many orchid growers have short flower stalks on balconies. I think it is because when the balcony is closed, as soon as the sun comes out, sometimes the temperature is too high, which stimulates the flower buds too much and they open early. (The balcony where I used to grow orchids, on a sunny winter day with the window closed, had a temperature of over 20 degrees.)
Before Spring Festival I forced a pot of Song Mei. After the flower bud had completed vernalization and before it moved, I put it on the balcony. The balcony temperature was between 15 degrees and 20 degrees during the day, around 10 degrees at night, and the humidity was not high (because the balcony and the room are separated by a sliding door, and the room has heating). Through the experiment, the flower stalk was still okay
Please see the pictures:
Later, because the temperature was quite high for a period before, the temperature in the orchid room rose quickly (the orchid room had light from 10 am to about 3 pm). When the temperature exceeded 20 degrees, I opened the orchid room window for ventilation
Several pots opened. The pictures below were all taken on the second day after opening, and they can still grow taller. Overall, the flower stalks are not considered short:

2. Next is the humidity issue. High humidity is naturally good for making stalks taller, but it does not affect them as much as temperature. In the two different humidity environments of my balcony and flower room, the flower stalks opened to about the same height. The main thing is still temperature control; it must not rise too fast, and the flower buds must be allowed to open slowly. In addition, I think when making stalks taller, watering thoroughly once is more beneficial for making the stalks taller.
3. Light issue. I do not think shading or exposure to the sun directly stimulates stalk height. What stimulates the flower buds is still the temperature issue. The so-called placing them under the orchid rack, in a place that cannot get sun, is because the temperature under the rack is low.
