This Dafugui plant produced 3 new shoots this year from 2, and one of the shoots has 8 leaves, so it cannot be called anything but robust. Under the same care, I noticed red spots appearing on the leaves of this pot of grass ------- a sign of excessive water. Today I decided to repot it and take a closer look at the cause.
Summary as follows:
1. An elongated plastic pot is not very suitable for growing Dafugui; a little too much water and spots will appear.
2. The growing medium should not be too rich; if too rich it burns the roots, and the roots do not like to grow downward.
3. Compared with other varieties, Dafugui does not like water, and it also needs less light.
Below is the Dafugui I repotted today: 2 producing 3, with flower buds, but the roots are not good, the medium is too rich, and watering was on the heavy side
Not many roots, new root tips burned, no crystal heads. The medium has a lot of peanut husk, and black soil is mostly the main reason. Because the soil is rich, there are many new shoots but not many roots. Because the soil is rich, the roots are not good but there are flower buds. If you can remove 30% of the black soil and peanut husk and replace them with Kanuma soil, that would be a medium that can grow good roots. I hope this is useful to fellow orchid growers.
Thank you to the original poster for sharing your experience with everyone! There is also excellent discussion in the replies, so please do not miss it (moderator's note).
Romantic Water wrote:Personally, I think Dafugui and Luyun prefer a slightly drier medium, and are best grown in medium or small potsWith the Dafugui and Luyun I repotted today, I indeed found this problem. It seems each variety has its own characteristics, and growing orchids is probably where the fun lies.
Today I added more snake wood and fired soil to the medium; we will see next year.
I enjoy reading your posts, orchid brother.
