Major manufacturers Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Factory and Weida Pharmaceutical were found to have added industrial-grade magnesium carbonate, in the granular stomach powder of "Shuang Bao Le An Gastrointestinal Medicine" and Weida's "Le Wei Ru" capsules.

The Taichung City Health Bureau yesterday coordinated with the Changhua District Prosecutors Office to inspect pharmaceutical factories making medicines containing magnesium carbonate, and unexpectedly found that the "Zheng Xing Tai Wei Da Le" stomach powder produced by Ren Sheng Pharmaceutical Factory contained industrial-grade calcium carbonate. This morning, it was further discovered that the stomach powder and capsules from Johnson & Johnson and Weida Pharmaceutical factories used industrial-grade magnesium carbonate.

Wu Hsiu-ying, deputy director-general of the Food and Drug Administration, said that magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate can be used as antacids, mainly to control stomach acid in the human body, so they are often widely used in medicines such as stomach powder.

Wu Hsiu-ying emphasized that after a comprehensive review, among all manufacturers using magnesium carbonate, only two items - Johnson & Johnson's granular stomach powder "Shuang Bao Le An Gastrointestinal Medicine" and Weida's "Le Wei Ru" capsules - used industrial-grade magnesium carbonate from the upstream chemical manufacturer "Yun Cheng". Manufacturers have now been required to carry out removal from shelves, and related pharmaceutical factories, drug distributors and pharmacy channels must carry out preventive removal from shelves.

The Taichung City Health Bureau is currently investigating Weida's purchase status, and confirmed data will be announced separately.
