Who Really Needs the Danjiang Bridge? Analyzing the Real Demand Behind It

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

The "Danjiang Bridge," debated for more than twenty years, was decided today (June 19), and a massive structure blocking the Tamsui River estuary is about to take shape!

The "Danjiang Bridge," proposed for construction in the 1990s, passed its environmental impact assessment in 1999, but stalled due to "lack of urgency" and "funding problems." It was restarted in 2010 when Taipei County was upgraded to a special municipality. Then, after the Environmental Protection Administration held three successive "environmental difference meetings," it announced "conditional" approval on April 24 of this year (2013) under strong pressure from the New Taipei City mayor and local elected representatives, and today it was rapidly forced through in the environmental impact assessment conference. On May 25, figures from the arts and academic circles held an arts and cultural event by the Tamsui River called "Dedicated to the Mother River," calling on the government not to easily destroy natural ecology and cultural assets, to preserve the humanistic spirit for future generations, and not to become sinners against history!
