Taitung farmers need you for replanting, report for support duty now

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

On the second day after Super Typhoon Nepartak passed through, initial agricultural losses were estimated at as high as 910 million yuan. Although the Executive Yuan decided to allocate 800 million yuan in disaster relief funds and to handle matters leniently, swiftly, and simply, farmers all say that injecting manpower and helping with replanting and clearing the environment are the current priorities.

Some farmers had harvested rice soaked by rainwater, others had newly built greenhouses destroyed, and the trellises for betel pepper leaves were also blown crooked. What troubles farmers is that to apply for cash subsidies, they not only have to wait for township office surveyors to gather on-site evidence before they can clean up; the "gap period" before the next planting, how to switch crops, and where to find sales channels are even more of a headache. In the end, they can only start cleaning up first.

It is not just money; they need people and resumption of work

According to statistics from the Council of Agriculture at 5 p.m. today (the 10th) after Super Typhoon Nepartak passed through, the amount of losses reached as high as 910 million yuan, and Taitung County, which bore the brunt, suffered losses as high as 720 million yuan. People not only wildly circulated small-donation messages on Facebook; Premier Lin Chuan also instructed that the central government would allocate 500 million yuan on the 11th for the Taitung County Government to coordinate disaster relief, with an additional 300 million yuan for agricultural losses.

Cash is certainly an important means of disaster relief and replanting, but administrative disaster surveys always follow established procedures. With limited manpower, Lin Chuan's principles of "lenient, swift, and simple" can probably only be regarded as a political declaration. For farmers, organizing manpower, reconstruction, and replanting are the urgent priorities.
