Cook for yourself, cook by yourself: students in northern Taiwan, China become self-cooking citizens

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Build your own kitchen yourself. A group of students from the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries Management at National Taipei University of Education who love to cook with their own hands found that the school had no decent kitchen, so the year before last they founded the "Stove Corner Workshop", using an abandoned teachers' dormitory to "set up a stove corner", ordering their own wooden molds and pouring cement to make a countertop. In the future it will be opened for use by National Taipei University of Education students, and they even plan to imitate the TV program "Who's Coming to Dinner", inviting friends to use seasonal ingredients from local small farmers to make their signature dishes at the stove corner.

Drawing design plans and pouring cement, all done by themselves

Many universities worry that students will burn down the kitchen and forbid cooking on campus. In September of the year before last, 6 third-year students from the Department of Cultural and Creative Industries Management at National Taipei University of Education formed the "Stove Corner Workshop" to challenge the school's rule against cooking with fire. In a century-old dormitory, in a space that National Taipei University of Education students call "Wolong 29", they used portable gas stoves to stir-fry dishes, holding co-cooking and communal-eating activities.

After advancing to their fourth year, they further combined it with their department's graduation project and applied to the school, and unexpectedly the application was approved. The 6 people, in another century-old dormitory, learned to paint, repair water pipes, draw design plans, and even nail wooden molds and pour cement to make tables, building a real stove corner with their own hands.

To make good use of a space of less than 4 ping, the stove corner has only one long table. The front section is a cooking area with a gas stove, the middle has a countertop, and the end section provides a place for everyone to put their meals. Although mini, it is very cozy. While enjoying the food, you can also watch the chef stir-fry and, by the way, hear where the ingredients in your mouth come from.

Member Xiao Qingxu said that the kitchen cost only 10,000 yuan from nothing to completion, because many friends donated supplies when they heard they were going to build a kitchen. But the construction process took a lot of time and effort. In the early stage they continuously redesigned, constructed, and redesigned again, and it took at least more than half a year to complete. However, it also gave them a lot of inspiration. "After this, I started to dare to think about some wildly imaginative things, and then find ways to gather resources to complete them."
