To grow good rice and care for the elderly, Shi'an Community joins hands with students from Nanjing Arts Institute
Text/Shian Community
Did you know that buying a bag of rice can do a lot of good? It can love the Earth, it can care for the elderly, it can support farmers, and it can even beautify the environment! This is why students from Tainan National University of the Arts chose to work with the Shian Community to jointly promote high-quality, pesticide-free rice.
This is a force that seems quiet yet works steadily, step by step, influencing Taiwanese society! Zhou Xuanrui, a student at Tainan National University of the Arts, said that because he is in the community building group, he has been in continuous contact with many communities, and has gradually seen the most real problems in rural areas. Seeing a community establish a cooperative through residents independently pooling funds, growing rice in an environmentally friendly way without spraying pesticides, and returning the sales profits of this pesticide-free rice to the community to solve the various problems arising from the severe aging of the rural population, he felt that this social enterprise upholding good intentions should be made known to the outside world, so that a good system can continue.
Starting last year, the students began interviewing contract farmers working with the cooperative one after another. Through the continuous interview process, they also saw that many farmers had gained new views on the environment and the community because of the cooperative.
