Piyaway Atayal Tribe: The Piyaway Atayal Community

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Piyaway is a small Atayal community of just over a hundred people, perched on the slope of the Northern Cross-Island Highway. Within the broader Gaoyi Village, it is an unassuming ”small community.” Traffic streaming toward Lala Mountain often speeds right past it, and one careless moment is enough to overshoot it entirely.

How has this unassuming "small community" spent decades protecting its land through "friendly farming"?

By drawing community maps, they connect the younger generation with the wisdom passed down from the elders; through community building, they foster a bond between the community's young people and this land; by gradually understanding the importance of biodiversity, they even established the Swinhoe's Pheasant Conservation Patrol Team on October 12, 2002, and by drawing on their familiarity with the mountain forests, they record the traces of Swinhoe's pheasants. After several incidents of pesticide poisoning, they began to reflect on the importance of health, land, people and biodiversity. After how many bleak harvests did today's rewards finally come? In the 101st year of the Republic of China (2012), the community finally obtained Compassionate Organic Certification, and this summer we share their joy together.

The Taste of This Summer

The fragrant May peach, with its sweet, watery fresh scent, brings heartfelt delight whether cradled in your hands or carried in a bag. The farmers of Piyaway greet summer once a year with this sweet treasure; years of persistent organic cultivation give the May peach a faint gardenia fragrance.

The texture of the May peach could be called the most delightful of all: it can be left longer on the tree or in storage to enjoy the ripe, soft texture of "tree-ripened red." Most special of all is its flesh, somewhere between melting and semi-melting,

with a springy, bouncy bite.

[Elder Yuhao and Adai]

Elder Yuhao has long carried on the wisdom of his ancestors, reflecting on how they once lived in mutually beneficial coexistence with the environment. The elder is quite confident about the fruit he grows; after years of persistence, the land and the fruit trees have reached a perfect balance. Every fruit season, the birds and monkeys always beat us to the feast, but this land belongs to them in the first place. This year, for the loquats, the elder even deliberately left some unbagged for the small animals to eat!
