Battery-cage eggs are inhumane; animal rights group says Uni-President, Weichuan, and Natural Vitality are suspected of misleading consumers

"Cruelty to chickens! How could there be good eggs?" The Taiwan Animal Society Research Association, which has long followed animal welfare issues, noting the recent frequent food safety problems at major domestic food companies, on the 7th attacked the two major food retail operators Uni-President and Wei Chuan for packaging "battery cage eggs" through image marketing, leading consumers to mistakenly believe the products came from free-range or humane rearing environments and selling them at above-market prices, in what amounts to deceiving consumers.

Battery cage chicken farming violates animal welfare and increases food safety risks

Chu Tseng-hung, chief executive of the Animal Society Research Association, pointed out that in view of "battery cage rearing" violating animal welfare and also increasing food safety risks, the EU passed the "Laying Hen Cage Ban Directive" in 1999, requiring EU countries to abolish battery cage chicken farming by 2012. As of October this year, apart from Italy and Greece, which have not yet implemented the directive, this trend has also spread to countries such as the UK and the US; besides legislating a declaration that laying hens should move toward "abolishing battery cage rearing," many multinational fast-food chains have also responded by using "cage-free" egg products.

Chu Tseng-hung said that using battery cages to raise laying hens in factory-style intensive production deprives hens of any space to rest normally, preen their feathers, take dust baths, or dodge one another, easily causing the birds to contract diseases and die, and also forcing farmers to add antibiotics to feed to prevent infection, increasing the risk of drug residues in eggs and creating a vicious cycle in food safety.

Chu Tseng-hung said that although some domestic egg farmers have abolished battery cages and transitioned to humane rearing, seeking consumer support through production methods that value animal welfare, food retail operators use advertising and marketing tactics to package eggs from "battery cage environments" as coming from humane rearing environments, not only passing off inferior goods as superior but also undercutting truly dedicated chicken farmers.
