The leisure agriculture area "Golden Town" in Gongguan Township, Miaoli County, has been especially lively lately. The brand "Golden Hundred Barrels. Zhenyue Juice," founded by the Golden Town Association, not only uses the strength of the community to solve the problem of excess fruit production, but also adds richer possibilities to the development of the leisure agriculture area.
At nine in the morning, the processing room of Me Zao Ju Natural Farm is filled with the aroma of fruit. Person in charge Chen Fusheng and colleague Chen Yourui are busy pouring freshly cooked passion fruit and tankan oranges into the pulping machine. Hot juice flows from the outlet. While waiting for it to cool, the two first wash empty glass bottles, then add an appropriate amount of sugar to the juice. "Golden Hundred Barrels. Zhenyue Juice" is then complete.
These bottles of golden juice, with a sweet-and-sour taste, a juice content of 50%, and insistence on purely handmade production, actually have a backstory woven together from the love of community members.
The community mobilizes spontaneously to solve the problem of excess production for small farmers
"This is the first activity that brings the community together. Golden Hundred Barrels is not a one-off product. We hope there will be more Golden Town series afterward," Lin Ruiying said. Hakka people tend to be more conservative, and there are actually many talented people in the community, but they lack connections with one another. "I hope everyone can build consensus while doing this and use the social enterprise approach to solve local problems."
Chen Shuhui also said that "Golden Hundred Barrels" does not rely on outside processing businesses to buy raw materials and remake them. From production, processing, packaging to sales, everything is handled entirely by community members, independently developing local specialty agricultural products and building rural characteristics. The money earned also goes back to members of the association. "I think this is the best model for local leisure agriculture."
The Golden Town series has just started. Through farmers producing their own goods and association members helping with processing, distribution and online sales, they are spontaneously upgrading the local primary to tertiary industries. Lin Ruiying hopes: "I hope what consumers drink is not just a sip of juice, but also a sense of the culture of community agriculture."
