2014 Food Safety Series Course Opens: You Are the Gatekeeper of a Happy Dining Table
Over the past two or three years, food safety incidents have repeatedly dominated the headlines, and the relevant authorities have been diligent in declaring war on unscrupulous merchants. Yet after Fat Daddy, Ding Wang and Fairy Kitchen, what have we learned? What is still missing from the government's response? Must consumers wait until the media blows the whistle before lamenting, "A thousand pieces of gold cannot buy knowing in advance; a hundred poisons cannot be chased back once swallowed"? Why is it that seemingly scientific ideas about diet still cannot let us eat with peace of mind?
After the endless stream of food safety incidents, some people began to panic, mistakenly believing that anything they ate could be problematic. Some even mistake panic for cowardice, thinking that "only those wealthy people who are afraid of dying worry about this and that," while others stress that they are "shrewd" consumers and therefore do not worry about any poison finding its way into their bodies. Yet these reactions show that the general public has mistakenly equated food education with cultural capital, and even more, they highlight that people have forgotten that the reason we cannot eat with peace of mind stems from an unhealthy overall environmental ecology, compounded by the advancement of food technology and industry, and even factors such as globalized free trade…. All of these affect the bunch of greens that mothers hold in their hands to rinse, and even the steak sizzling in the frying pan.
In recent years, the Homemakers United Foundation has worked to help the public understand the inseparable relationship between LOHAS eating, healthy living and a green environment. The "Happy Dining Table: You Are the Gatekeeper" course offered by the Taichung branch is quite popular, and this year there are also changes in the course content. Starting with the required course "Green Food Education," students learn the great subject of diet through household consumption. In addition, "Tableware Safety and Cleaning" introduces methods for choosing tableware and cookware, and even eco-friendly, non-toxic cleaning methods. The following courses include the homemakers' favorite food ingredient safety class, "The Invisible Killer in Vegetables—Nitrate," "The Platform Between Agricultural Products and the Dining Table," and "Green Consumption and Choosing Food Ingredients." Beyond that, we also emphasize that the new concept of eating requires not only eating well and choosing wisely, but also wasting less! Accordingly, in conjunction with "Food Revolution Day" launched by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, which this year falls on 5/14, we have specially arranged "Leftovers and Kitchen Waste: On Food Waste," emphasizing that we should not only eat real food but also pay attention to reducing waste at the source and cutting down on food waste.
The Homemakers United Foundation Taichung branch's "Happy Dining Table" course content is very rich. Whether you attend all eight sessions or just come to a single session, it will absolutely let you go home with peace of mind and dine with a smile! Call (04)2375-5234 to sign up! The first session, the general introduction "Dining Table Happiness Starts with Green Food Education," begins on 4/1 (Tue) at 13:20! (If you need childcare services, please let us know in advance so we can help arrange it!)
