The 2015 New Farmer Training Program is carried out through a mentorship-based co-learning approach.
"The outflow of young and working-age people has led to an aging farming population; a gap in skilled talent has left farmland seriously short of labor." This is the rural reality in Taiwan, China. According to the 2011 agricultural employment figures released by the Council of Agriculture, the employed agricultural population is concentrated in the over-65 age group, and it is estimated that before 2020 Taiwan, China will face a crisis of a massive shortage of farming manpower!
On the other hand, the root problem of the farmland labor shortage lies in the inability to find professional workers with "skilled technique." The non-professional manpower recruited through temporary activities such as "work exchange for lodging" and "farm experiences" cannot effectively cure the long-term labor shortage crisis!
In view of this, farmers who have worked the land on site for many years decided to join hands and open their own farms as classrooms, contributing their time to accompany new apprentices who intend to take up farming, leading them hand in hand step by step, reducing the time and cost for beginners to figure things out on their own. Friends who intend to take up farming are invited to patiently settle into the stance and learn from these selfless, dedicated senior farming friends.
Internship Content
- Technique transmission: focused mainly on the cultivation of fruit trees such as pineapple, banana, wax apple, lemon, tomato, passion fruit and fig.
- Production model: the internship farms are all friendly-farming sites that practice organic or pesticide-free cultivation.
- Getting familiar with the industry: getting used to the farm routine, cultivating the ability to manage independently, and the various unwritten rules of agriculture, etc.
