2014 Taichung Earth Day Series Kicks Off: Low-Carbon Diet, Cherish the Environment
This year, April 22 is the 45th Earth Day. The Environmental Protection Bureau of the Taichung City Government and the Taichung Chapter of the Homemakers United Foundation, in conjunction with World Book Day on the following day, April 23, are holding the "Earth Day Green Feast" series of events at Dadun Cultural Center. With "low-carbon diet" as the main theme, the program combines a green food education environmental book fair with film screenings and discussions, green picture-book storytelling, and other activities. Residents and children are welcome to come and take part over the weekend, and to boost their Earth-loving quotient through green reading. For details, please visitwww.huf.org.tw
On the morning of 4/18, the Environmental Protection Bureau and the Homemakers United Foundation jointly held a press conference at Dadun Cultural Center to launch the events, introducing the various environmental education activities in Taichung this year in response to Earth Day. They invited 50 children from three classes at St. James Kindergarten to read the green food picture book "Milk Tea Is So Good" together with Hsieh Wen-chi, director of the Taichung Chapter of the Homemakers United Foundation. The author of "Milk Tea Is So Good," Liu Ching-yen, and the illustrator, Yu Mi-chen, are both from Taichung, and pearl milk tea also originated as a drink from Taichung, so it was especially fitting to use this picture book on Earth Day in Taichung to let the children know that homemade milk tea is not only delicious but also healthier, while also using the story's plot to subtly remind them to drink sugar-sweetened beverages in moderation.
